Fleetwood Flying, Højgaard Hunting—Title Fight Set As Rai on the Rise! One Clear at Yas Links

The Abu Dhabi Championship is shaping up for a thrilling finish as England’s Aaron Rai takes a slender one-shot lead into Sunday’s final round at Yas Links, chasing his first DP World Tour title in five years.

The 2020 Scottish Open winner shared the halfway lead with Tommy Fleetwood but pulled clear on Saturday, carding a sparkling third-round 66 to reach 20-under-par. His precision off the tee and iron play were textbook, and if he can hold his nerve on Sunday, Rai could double his Rolex Series tally.

“I drove it extremely well. Some really good iron play. Created a lot of chances,” said Rai. “It played tricky out there, especially the back nine… You’ve got to try to stick to how you see the course, and if you play well, there are a lot of opportunities that naturally present themselves.”

It wasn’t all smooth sailing. Rai’s lone blemish came on the par-3 17th, where a wayward tee shot saw his lead shrink from three shots to one. With a stacked leaderboard behind him, there’s no room for error on Championship Sunday.

Fleetwood and Højgaard Hot on His Heels

Two-time Abu Dhabi Championship winner Tommy Fleetwood sits just one shot back after firing a bogey-free 67. The Englishman, who has made a habit of delivering in desert conditions, was full of praise for Rai but quietly confident in his own game.

“I think it was a really good day of patience for me,” Fleetwood said. “Aaron played phenomenally well. He was unbelievable today in every department. I’ve been saying the whole time, I’m playing very good golf at the moment… I looked at the leaderboard and saw Nacho had made birdie, and was like, I need to make birdie to get into the last group which would be nice.”

Fleetwood did just that—rolling one in on the final hole to join Rai and Nicolai Højgaard in the last group for Sunday’s finale.

Højgaard’s 65 was a near-perfect display of ball-striking, featuring eight birdies and a single bogey. The Danish powerhouse, who has already proven he can win on big stages, sounded composed and ready for the challenge.

“It almost felt like it was a perfect round of golf,” Højgaard said. “I played really nice… If you’re in control of your golf ball, there’s a lot of chances. Done it before, but yeah, it’s a new day. Anything can happen on Sunday.”

The Chasers: Elvira, Sullivan, and Hillier in Striking Distance

Spain’s Nacho Elvira closed birdie-birdie for a 68 to sit two shots off the pace at 18-under, while Andy Sullivan and Daniel Hillier lurk just behind on 17-under. All three remain within striking distance if the leaders stumble.

With calm conditions forecast and Yas Links yielding birdies in bunches, the final day of the Abu Dhabi Championship promises fireworks.

A Sunday Showdown in the Desert

Rai may have the advantage, but Fleetwood and Højgaard know the course, the wind, and the moment. The Englishman summed it up best: “This is what we practice for. These are the times of our lives.”

If Rai can repeat Saturday’s control and composure, he’ll cap his return to the winner’s circle in style. But with three proven contenders breathing down his neck, the Abu Dhabi Championship is poised for one of the season’s most dramatic finishes.
