Australian Austin Bautista turned the Sunshine Tour into his own stage on Friday, firing a sizzling 62 in the final round of the Sunbet Challenge at Wild Coast Sun to capture his maiden title by a single stroke. It was golf’s version of Cinderella—except instead of a glass slipper, Bautista had a couch.
“I am ecstatic and super happy to have won this week. It was a hard week but securing the title was definitely worth the wait,” Bautista said, sounding like a man who’d just found out the minibar was free.
That couch story? Pure gold.
“The boys I’m staying with gave me the worst bed, actually they put me on the couch. But I walked away with the silverware, so it was worth it in the end,” Bautista joked.
From slow simmer to red-hot

Bautista didn’t exactly burst out of the gates. He opened the week with a steady 69, followed by a sharper 65, leaving him three shots adrift of the lead heading into Friday.
But when it mattered, the 27-year-old went full flamethrower: five birdies in his first eight holes, four more on the back nine, and just one blemish to keep things interesting.
“The Sunshine Tour is a great tour. We get to come to amazing places. The Wild Coast Sun is a beautiful layout – it’s so challenging,” he said, a nod to both the venue and the circuit that’s quietly becoming a launchpad for rising talent.
The nearly men
Michael Hollick, who began the day with a one-shot cushion, posted a tidy 66 but still came up short, settling for second on 13 under. Samuel Simpson (66), the Mopani Zambia Open champ, and veteran Lyle Rowe (67) shared third at 10 under, both left wondering what on earth Bautista had eaten for breakfast.
A win waiting to happen
This wasn’t exactly out of the blue. Bautista’s been hovering on the doorstep all season, with two top-three finishes and an eighth place already on the books. Friday simply sealed the deal.
For the Sunshine Tour, Bautista’s breakthrough is another reminder that the circuit remains fertile ground for new names, big stories, and the occasional player who can win off the back of a night on the sofa.
