The opening round of the Fortress Invitational delivered a tale of two Benjamins at Glendower Golf Club on Thursday, as Zimbabwe’s Benjamin Follett-Smith and South Africa’s Benjamin Van Wyk both carded superb seven-under-par 65s to take a share of the lead.
Glendower is no picnic – it’s a course that punishes anything sloppy – yet both players tore it apart with the kind of measured aggression usually reserved for Sunday afternoons. Follett-Smith was dynamite from the off, posting two eagles and four birdies, spoiling what could have been a flawless round only with a closing bogey on the 18th.
Van Wyk, meanwhile, kept things clinical rather than chaotic. His 65 came courtesy of eight birdies and a single bogey on the seventh – a scorecard that screams control as much as confidence.

“I was hitting the ball very well from tee to green and I capitalised with my putting which was very good. I kept the momentum going, especially when I missed the green,” said Van Wyk, who looks like a man ready to turn promise into silverware.
He’s not bluffing either. The 25-year-old has been quietly sharpening his game in recent weeks and brings form as well as belief into this week’s Fortress Invitational.
“I am feeling very good about my game. I have been working on my swing so it’s good to see some consistency where I can just rely on my putting,” he added. A dangerous statement for the rest of the field – when a pro starts trusting the flatstick, things tend to happen.
Sitting just one shot back on six under are Martin Voster, Tyran Snyders, Daniel van Tonder and Warwick Purchase, who each signed for 66. They’re within striking distance and fully aware that Glendower rewards momentum but shows no mercy to hesitation.
There’s a long road ahead, but the tone has been set. Day one of the Fortress Invitational has already served up a cracking leaderboard and just enough tension to keep the vultures – and viewers – circling. Two Benjamins are out front. The only question now is whether either of them can turn a Thursday lead into a Sunday win.
Round two just got interesting.
