Hennie du Plessis Completes Emotional Comeback with Victory at Blu Label Unlimited Challenge

The Blu Label Unlimited Challenge at the Gary Player Country Club didn’t just crown a champion on Saturday — it told a story of grit, graft, and a golfer who refused to fade away.

After 18 months out of action following wrist surgery and a long, stubborn recovery, Hennie du Plessis staged a fairytale comeback to claim his third Sunshine Tour title in emphatic fashion.

Du Plessis racked up 49 points in the modified Stableford event, sealing his first win since 2018 — and his first as a father — with a calm, mature performance that suggested the long layoff had given him more than just perspective. Anthony Michael finished a distant second on 35 points, with MJ Viljoen and Yurav Premlall sharing third on 33.

For Du Plessis, the win was soaked in emotion. After years of promise interrupted by pain and rehab setbacks, this was a moment that meant far more than silverware.

“I think that’s why golf seems a little bit easier now. It’s harder to be a parent, I can tell you that. I’m only joking. It’s been a long time since my last win. This is a special one, it’s a special place. I’ve got my family here and it’s such a special moment,” said Du Plessis, beaming as he embraced his loved ones greenside.

The 27-year-old admitted this week’s Blu Label Unlimited Challenge had originally been pencilled in as a tune-up — a chance to test the wrist and shake off the competitive rust. But once he got rolling, the old spark returned.

“I put in the work to get back here. This was sort of a warmup event to see where my game is at, and I’m very happy with the way I played, especially coming down the stretch,” he said.

“I had a few fumbles on the back nine and my caddie Zack (Rasego) just spoke to me and told me to stay focused and slow everything down. I started seeing and hitting better shots and made a few clutch putts. I think my game is a little bit better than the last time I played.”

That kind of understatement is classic Du Plessis — a player who’s been on the brink before, but now looks more grounded than ever. Whether it’s fatherhood, perspective, or just good old-fashioned perseverance, something has clicked.

The Blu Label Unlimited Challenge also shone a light on South Africa’s rising women’s stars, as the 36-hole Ladies Challenge unfolded nearby at the Lost City Golf Course. Kaiyuree Moodley stole the show there, claiming her maiden professional victory with a score of three points — one clear of Ivanna Samu.

“It feels amazing to have my first win on tour. We’re really grateful to Blu Label for giving us a chance to play,” said Moodley, whose steady composure under pressure mirrored the spirit of Du Plessis’s own comeback.

Both winners left Sun City with more than trophies — they left with proof that patience, persistence, and a little faith can still go a long way in this game.
