Porteous Won’t Blink: Bogey-Free Again and Three Clear at Killarney

Haydn Porteous is doing that rare thing in tournament golf: making a good course look like it’s been slightly mislaid.

The South African held onto top spot at the Cell C Challenge in Honour of Gary Player with a second straight 64 on Friday, moving to 12 under par and taking a three-stroke lead into the weekend at Killarney Country Club. More impressively, he’s doing it without a single blemish—bogey-free through 36 holes.

If the rest of the field wanted a sign that the opening round wasn’t a one-off, Friday provided it in bold.

Long fires 63 to keep Porteous honest

England’s Joe Long is the nearest challenger after a 63 that moved him to nine under at halfway. It is the sort of round that normally puts you in charge of a golf tournament. This week, it merely keeps you within shouting distance of a man who hasn’t missed a step.

Behind them, a tightly packed group is tied third on eight under: Zimbabwe’s David Amm and Benjamin Follett-Smith, plus South Africans Nikhil Rama and Herman Loubser.

Porteous’ momentum from 2025 keeps rolling

Porteous’ form continues a strong run that began with a long-awaited return to winning ways in 2025, when he took the Vodacom Origins of Golf at Gowrie Farm—an opportunity he earned via an invitation from the Sunshine Tour and then grabbed with both hands.

“The win at Gowrie Farm was an awesome reboot for my career. For a long time I’ve battled with confidence and feeling like I’m moving in the right direction. Now for the first time in my career, I feel like I’m putting some big blocks down and building on them,” he said.

A timely wake-up call—at the same venue

There’s an added twist to this week’s dominance: Porteous played a Blu Label Bushveld Tour event at Killarney the week before and missed the cut, shooting 75 and 69. He calls it a well-timed reminder that his game still needed sharpening.

“I realised I had a bit of rust in my game so I did some hard work towards the end of that week and leading up to this event, and it looks like that work has paid off.”

Hard to argue when the scorecard has been spotless for two days.

The biggest change might be off the course

Form can come from swing tweaks, schedules, confidence, or a putter that suddenly behaves. But Porteous suggests the most meaningful shift has been personal—a change in perspective that has carried onto the fairways.

“You know, getting married and welcoming our baby girl who is now coming up to four weeks old – you start to realise what life’s all about and that’s hopefully going to show in my game.”

Two 64s, zero bogeys, and a three-shot cushion heading into the weekend: if that’s perspective, the rest of the field might want some.
