Only in golf could a man get stung by a bee on the first tee, shake it off like a minor inconvenience, and still claw his way into a share of the lead. But that’s exactly what Daniel van Tonder did at the Fortress Invitational at Glendower Golf Club—because why make life easy when you can add a personal medical emergency to a windy afternoon and still shoot 69?
Van Tonder, tougher than an old leather golf glove, sits tied at nine under par heading into the weekend alongside Christiaan Burke after a gritty round that looked more like survival than sport at times.
“On the first tee box, just before we teed off, a bee stung me on my right hand, causing a bit of swelling. My hand was swollen and burning. It wasn’t easy to hold the club and get some feel,” Van Tonder said—delivering the kind of quote that should be followed by a medal ceremony.
And yet he birdied the opening hole. Some players crack under pressure. Van Tonder shook off nature itself.
“It was a tough day with the wind, and the greens were really tricky in the afternoon. But I think I coped well with everything. I’m happy with my game,” he said, eyeing what would be his third win of the year if he keeps this up.
Burke Makes His Move
Sharing top spot at the Fortress Invitational is 22-year-old Christiaan Burke, who clearly didn’t read the script about showing too much respect to experience. He rolled in three straight birdies over his final six holes to post a confident 67—proof that momentum doesn’t care who you are, only how well you roll the rock.
“Today was really good, but it was quite tough with the wind. It was swirling a lot, so it was difficult to get the distances right. I was putting solid and just tried to manage my game around the course,” said Burke, hunting his maiden Sunshine Tour title. Judging by his swagger, it might not be far away.
“I know this course well. I play here a lot. Heading into the weekend I’ll just stick to my own game and not worry about the other golfers. I’ll just focus on hitting the fairways and greens and the putts will come. I am hitting the ball well, so it will be an exciting next two days.”
A Packed Chase Behind
Just one shot back, the cavalry is gathering. Five of them, in fact—Kyle Barker, Tyrone Ryan, Jonathan Broomhead, Deon Germishuys and Rhys Enoch—are all right in the hunt at eight under par. If the leaderboard at Glendower gets any tighter, they’ll need a crowbar to separate the names.
With two rounds to go, expect more fireworks—and hopefully fewer insects. This Fortress Invitational is shaping up to be a proper weekend brawl. Stingers, swirling winds, slick greens—bring it on.
Golf doesn’t need pyrotechnics to manufacture drama. Sometimes all it needs is a bee.
