Portugal is set to enter the spotlight of senior professional golf with the launch of the Portugal Invitational, a landmark tournament debuting the week of July 27, 2026, at the newly redesigned Els Club Vilamoura.
The Portugal Invitational marks the first-ever PGA TOUR-sanctioned individual stroke play event held in the country and will bring together a 78-player field of PGA TOUR Champions stars, Legends Tour icons, and World Golf Hall of Fame members. Oh, and did we mention there’s a tidy $3 million up for grabs?
This fresh five-year partnership between PGA TOUR Champions, Arrow Global Group, Turismo de Portugal, and Turismo de Algarve is more than just another date on the calendar—it’s the opening tee shot of a bold new era in European golf.
“We are thrilled to partner with Arrow Global Group, Turismo de Portugal, Turismo de Algarve and Ernie Els to announce this exciting, first-of-its-kind PGA TOUR Champions event in Portugal,” said PGA TOUR Champions President Miller Brady.
“This Tour is a global showcase of the game’s legendary players, and we know the great golf fans in Portugal and throughout Europe will welcome the opportunity to watch them compete in person at The Els Club Vilamoura.”
A Field Full of Legends, A Course Designed by One

Set on the sun-soaked Algarve coast, The Els Club Vilamoura is no stranger to spotlight golf. This is where Shane Lowry triumphed in 2012 and Padraig Harrington took top honours in 2016 when it hosted the Portugal Masters.
Now with a fresh facelift by none other than Ernie Els, the course is poised for a grand comeback.
“Whenever our firm designs a golf course, we always have an eye on what makes it a successful tournament venue,” said Els.
“We’re very proud of this course; it looks incredible. There are a lot of great holes, a lot of memorable holes, and overall, it’s a really well-balanced test of golf… The players are going to love it, not just the golf course but this whole destination.”
It’s safe to say the Big Easy didn’t just leave his signature on the greens—he’s imprinted a full symphony of championship golf across the landscape. Els’ design blends aesthetic pleasure with strategic grit, offering up a true test that’s likely to separate the seasoned shot-makers from the scorecard scribblers.
Algarve’s Luxury Pivot from Beach Bum to Big Time Golf
Vilamoura has always been a hotspot for golden sand, rosé wine, and Mediterranean charm, but now it’s aiming higher—straight into the rarefied air of elite golf tourism.
“This announcement signifies the convergence of several heavyweights in the game of golf… and we believe this tournament will showcase the world-class quality of the course and the strength of our long-term commitment to the region,” said John Calvão, Arrow Global Group Fund Principal.
“We’ve made a significant investment in the destination… Soon, we’ll be adding a country club and a beach club, making this a destination that truly has everything for families and all generations to enjoy.”
And it’s not just golf. From the ancient ruins of Loulé, to the oyster-laden estuaries of Ria Formosa, and the dramatic cliffs of the Seven Hanging Valleys Trail, the Algarve offers a postcard-perfect experience long after the final putt drops.
Portugal’s Place on Golf’s Grand Stage
Though it hosted the 2005 World Cup of Golf, Portugal has largely played the role of a scenic backdrop on the global stage—until now. This is a bold swing at the centre of the fairway, and a strategic one at that.
“Portugal has increasingly become a world-class destination for major international sporting events and welcoming PGA TOUR Champions is a natural next step,” said Carlos Abade, President of Turismo de Portugal.
“Hosting the Portugal Invitational in Vilamoura is a historic milestone for the Algarve and for Portugal,” added André Gomes, President of the Algarve Tourism Board.
“The Algarve has been Portugal’s leading golf destination for decades… This tournament raises the bar and reflects the regional ambition to establish the Algarve as a year-round tourist destination.”
A Global Stage, A Local Legacy
With all three rounds set to be broadcast on GOLF Channel and beamed out to more than 170 countries, the Portugal Invitational won’t be short on international eyeballs—or impact.
It also strengthens the transatlantic golf bond through the PGA TOUR’s Strategic Alliance with the European Tour Group, welcoming in Legends Tour players and rekindling the spark of cross-tour camaraderie.
And as if the setting, the stars, and the scenery weren’t enough, the tournament has entrusted its future to seasoned PGA TOUR executive Todd Rhinehart, now announced as Tournament Director.
With Rhinehart at the helm, the Portugal Invitational is in capable hands for a smooth takeoff and a steady climb.
In a sport that often moves at a glacial pace, this feels like a brisk walk toward progress.
The Portugal Invitational isn’t just adding another trophy to the calendar—it’s carving out a legacy in granite. Or in this case, Algarve limestone.
