There are places in Scottish golf that don’t need hype, because the place itself does the talking. The Gleneagles golf resort is one of them — and it has just been told, again, that it’s the best of its kind outside the United States, for a sixth straight year.
The 850-acre Perthshire estate has retained the title of ‘World’s #1 Golf Resort outside the USA’, and in Golf World’s latest global rankings it landed second overall, sitting just behind Bandon Dunes in Oregon. In other words: the Glorious Playground is still playing in the biggest game, and it’s doing it with the sort of polish that never shouts, only nods.
“Gleneagles continues to define the standard for golfing excellence and hospitality worldwide. It delivers far more than three world-class courses – it offers atmosphere, service, and a sense of occasion that make every visit unforgettable. Each return reminds me why it holds such a special place in the hearts of so many,” said Chris Bertram, editor of Golf World’s Top 100 World Resorts list.
Tradition, pedigree — and a modern edge where it counts

What separates Gleneagles from the long list of “luxury resorts” that look good in photos and forget the point of golf? History, for one. It remains the only European venue to have hosted both The Ryder Cup (2014) and The Solheim Cup (2019) — a rare double that tells you everything about trust, logistics, and the ability to rise to a week when the whole sport turns up to stare.
It will also become a second-time host of the ISPS HANDA Senior Open next year, having previously welcomed the event in 2022 — another reminder that this place isn’t preserved in aspic. It’s alive, tested, and built to stage serious golf.
Three championship courses, three different conversations

Part of the pull of the Gleneagles golf resort is that you can play three 18-hole championship courses that each stand on their own in global Top 100 lists — and each asks a different question of your game.
- The King’s and The Queen’s Courses have been restored to James Braid’s original inland links and heathland designs, with all the old-school charm you’d hope for and none of the museum stiffness.
- The PGA Centenary Course — a Jack Nicklaus design — has been upgraded with a state-of-the-art irrigation system, a practical improvement that matters precisely because it keeps the playing experience where it should be: reliable, fair, and worthy of the venue.
Conor O’Leary, Group Managing Director, commented: “To be named among the world’s finest golf and leisure destinations is a deeply meaningful honour for everyone at Gleneagles. It recognises not only the beauty of our estate and the richness of our experiences, but the passion and care our team pours into every detail, every day.
“To hold the title of World’s No. 1 Golf Resort outside the USA for the sixth consecutive year, and to remain the UK & Ireland’s leading golf destination for a decade, is both humbling and inspiring. These accolades reflect our unwavering commitment to excellence and our pursuit of preserving, and continually elevating, the timeless magic of Gleneagles.”
The round ends — and the day keeps going
The thing about a proper Scottish golf pilgrimage is that the course is the headline, but never the whole story. Beyond the fairways, Gleneagles leans into the full-country-estate experience with the confidence of somewhere that has been doing hospitality for longer than most places have been doing branding.
On the dining front, highlights include: The Strathearn (a theatrical Franco-Scottish experience), The Birnam (an Italian-American grill built around prime cuts and slow-cooked flavours), and Auchterarder 70, where you can toast your score while looking out across the 18th greens of The King’s and Queen’s. For golfers who love tradition, that view is a small reminder that the game still rewards good taste.
And if you’ve brought family, friends, or simply a restless spirit, there are over 50 country pursuits — from fly-fishing and falconry to off-roading, equestrian adventures, archery, and clay shooting — so everyone gets their own version of the Playground.
More than golf: a roll of honour that keeps growing
In addition to its golf accolades, Gleneagles’ recent honours include:
- ‘Best Hotel for Sports 2025’ – The Times and The Sunday Times Best Places to Stay Awards, recognising its extensive range of country pursuits and the new Gleneagles Sporting Club
- Named among ‘The World’s 50 Best Hotels’ in both 2023 and 2024 lists, and was the only hotel in the UK outside London to feature
- ‘Best Hotel of 2022’ by Virtuoso, a leading global network of luxury travel advisors
- AA Sustainable Award 2025, for its commitment to environmental excellence and sustainable operations
- Green Key Certified in 2024, a leading global standard for environmental responsibility
- Gold Status in the Green Tourism scheme since 2008, the first UK hotel to achieve this status.
