Hugo Townsend is on the brink of a career breakthrough after storming five shots clear heading into the final round of the GAC Rosa Challenge at Rosa Golf Club.
The Swede, son of Ryder Cup veteran Peter Townsend, lit up a blustery third round in Poland with a six-under 64 that vaulted him to 14 under par.
Behind him, Scotland’s Calum Fyfe, Italian Stefano Mazzoli, and Germany’s Anton Albers are clinging on at nine under, five adrift and praying the leader shows even the slightest crack.
It didn’t look likely early on. Townsend started steadily, mixing two birdies with a bogey, before flipping the switch on the back nine with a turbo-charged run: driver-driver-eagle at the 10th, back-to-back birdies at 12 and 13, and another dagger on 16 to hammer home his advantage.
“It started out tough, it was windy and blowing a lot so I was just trying to stay in the round,” Townsend admitted. “The round was pretty boring until the tenth hole, and then I went driver-driver to the middle of the green and holed a mega putt to kick-start the rest of the round.
“The par on 11 was big too. I bladed a wedge from the fairway and made a good par and then went birdie-birdie. It could’ve gone the other way pretty easily. Those momentum switches are huge and today it went my way.”
Townsend has quietly been building form all year, collecting three top-10s in 12 starts to sit 42nd in the Road to Mallorca standings. A win here would catapult him towards the coveted top 20 and a golden ticket to the DP World Tour.
“It would be massive to win,” he said. “Everyone wants to play well at the end of the year. It’s crunch time for everyone, so obviously it would be huge. A win would get me in the race for grabbing one of those 20 DP World Tour cards. I’ll try to go out tomorrow and shoot six or seven under again.”
Behind Townsend, the chase pack is loaded with intrigue. France’s Oihan Guillamoundeguy, the Road to Mallorca No.2, sits tied fifth on eight under with Romain Wattel. Just one shot further back are English veteran David Horsey, South Africa’s Jovan Rebula, Sweden’s Tobias Jonsson and Wales’ Toby Hunt — all lurking, all desperate for one final move.
But with Townsend’s driver humming, the putter rolling, and momentum firmly in his corner, it may take something close to a record round to stop him lifting a maiden HotelPlanner Tour trophy at the GAC Rosa Challenge.
The final round begins Sunday at 8:00 am local time, with Townsend, Fyfe, and Mazzoli going off in the last group at 11:44 am.
