Ryder Cup Reunion Turns into a One-Shot Thriller in Spain

If you were looking for a quiet opener to the season, the 2026 Staysure Marbella Legends at Aloha Golf Club wasn’t it. Jamie Donaldson turned the Costa del Sol into his own personal fireworks display, closing with a scorching 64 and a nerveless birdie at the last to nick the title by a single shot from Stephen Gallacher in a finish that would’ve had the tapas trembling.

The 2014 Ryder Cup hero posted a back-nine 30, hunted down his old team-mate, and left a star-studded field – including Miguel Ángel Jiménez, Thomas Bjørn and José María Olazábal – in his wake as he claimed his second Staysure Legends Tour crown, and his second win on Spanish soil in just a few months.

For most of Sunday at Aloha, the leaderboard looked like a Ryder Cup reunion with a Spanish accent. Overnight leaders Thomas Bjørn and home favourite Miguel Ángel Jiménez began the day in control, but as the sun climbed higher over Marbella, so did the scoring.

Scott Hend lit the fuse early, surging to -10 by the time the final group reached the 5th. Jiménez birdied the 1st to move to -9, but the locals’ favourite never quite found another gear, just as Gallacher and Donaldson started pummelling flags like it was 2014 all over again.

While others stalled, Donaldson’s round shifted from solid to spectacular on the inward half. Birdies began to fall like beach towels on a Costa del Sol sun lounger – four in five holes on 14, 15, 16 and, crucially, 18 – as he chased down Gallacher’s lead and turned a two-shot deficit into a one-shot win at the Staysure Marbella Legends.

One Shot, One 5-Iron, One Trophy

By the time the pair reached the 18th fairway, they were tied at -12 and the smart money was already sketching out play-off scenarios. Donaldson, however, had other ideas – and a 5-iron that should probably be framed.

Standing 205 yards out, he took dead aim and produced the sort of shot you normally only see on highlight reels and video games:

“I’m absolutely delighted,” said Donaldson, who only turned 50 in October and has made an impressive start to his Staysure Legends Tour career. “I played great today and I had to, given that Stevie’s shot an amazing round as well. The shot on 18th was a tricky one – you’ve got to take a club that’s only just going to make it to the hole if you hit it perfectly, which luckily I did.

“I hit a nice draw in there, one bounce and it was nice to see it next to the hole. It would have been even nicer if it had been a tap in, but it’s nice to leave yourself a little fiddly little one down the hill. When it went in it was amazing.

“Stevie is a really good friend of mine. You want him to birdie the last, then you battle it out in a play-off, but it’s a little bit easier if he doesn’t. You want people to beat you playing their best golf. He shot seven-under today, and I just happened to shoot eight to pip him by one. So a really good day all round and I’m looking forward to celebrating. Any time you win it’s special.”

The ball obeyed the script, took a bounce and finished three feet from the hole. Gallacher’s long birdie attempt slipped by, Donaldson cleaned up his “fiddly little one”, and the Staysure Marbella Legends title was his – along with another notch on his rapidly growing Staysure Legends Tour résumé.

Gallacher Goes Low, Just Not Low Enough

If this was robbery, it was the friendly kind. Gallacher, another pillar of Paul McGinley’s Ryder Cup side, did very little wrong on Sunday. He played the sort of stress-free golf that makes you wonder if he’s misplaced his heart-rate monitor, carding a bogey-free 65 that on most weeks would come with silverware attached.

After steadily collecting birdies, the Scot held a two-shot lead with four to play. But a par at the gettable par-five 16th cracked the door, and Donaldson barged straight through it with his late birdie barrage.

Gallacher, though, left Marbella with his game – and sense of humour – fully intact:

“I kind of thought I need to do something like that,” said Gallacher after a brilliant bogey-free 65 – a number matched by Markus Brier and the winner last time out in Mauritius, Greg Owen.

“One shot in it – that’s what happens. You’ve got to go low. Jamie’s a great player. I’ve been practising with him all week so I knew he was playing well. I holed more putts today and was just giving myself chances all day. I’ve played great and it’s a great week to start the year off. The course has been amazing, to be honest. The greens are phenomenal. With the bad weather we’ve had, the course is fantastic.”

If this is how Gallacher is starting his year on the Staysure Legends Tour, the rest of the schedule – including the Staysure Marbella Legends next time around – may want to take cover.

Big Names, Bigger Rounds and One Very Happy Crowd

Behind the leading duo, the cast list was hardly short of star power.

  • Former Ryder Cup captain Thomas Bjørn and local idol Miguel Ángel Jiménez finished third and fourth, unable to quite match the pyrotechnics of Donaldson and Gallacher over the closing stretch.
  • Sweden’s Mikael Lundberg closed with a 69 to share fifth alongside 2025 Order of Merit winner Scott Hend, who had led midway through the final round before fading late.
  • The top 10 was rounded out by Swedish pair Joakim Haeggman and Johan Edfors, Denmark’s Anders Hansen, and English duo Craig Farrelly and Greg Owen.

The shot of the day that didn’t involve a 5-iron on 18 came from another Spaniard. With the galleries packed around the par-three 8th, Miguel Angel Martin sent a 5-hybrid from 197 yards on a mission. It listened. One hop, one roll, one roar – an ace that set the tone for a festival of red numbers along the Costa del Sol.

In front of huge home crowds turning out for their heroes Jiménez and José María Olazábal, the Staysure Marbella Legends delivered the full menu: drama, low scoring, and just enough chaos to keep everyone checking their phones for leaderboard updates.

Aloha Sets the Standard for a Global Season

If Aloha Golf Club felt like the centre of the golfing universe this week, there was good reason. Immaculate fairways, “phenomenal” greens (Gallacher’s word, and he holed enough putts to know), and a field dripping with major winners and Ryder Cup captains made the Staysure Marbella Legends the perfect launchpad for 2026.

This season’s Staysure Legends Tour is nothing if not ambitious:

  • 18 tournaments scheduled, with more to be announced
  • Three Majors on the calendar
  • Over €20 million in prize money up for grabs
  • Iconic names in the field, including José María Olazábal, Miguel Ángel Jiménez, Ryder Cup captains Colin Montgomerie and Thomas Bjørn, plus Major champions Paul Lawrie and Michael Campbell

For Donaldson, it’s already a year to savour: two Staysure Legends Tour wins, both in Spain, and a clear message that he’s not treating 50 as a finishing line.

Next Stop: Barbados Legends

There’s no time for too long a siesta. From the sun-splashed fairways of the Staysure Marbella Legends, the Staysure Legends Tour now packs its bags for the Caribbean and the Barbados Legends hosted by Ian Woosnam.

If Marbella was any indication, the rest of 2026 is going to be loud, low-scoring and wildly entertaining. And if you’re standing on a fairway tied for the lead with Jamie Donaldson, you might want to think twice before giving him a 5-iron.
