Sunshine Tour Stars and Young Guns Target Limpopo Championship Glory

The Limpopo Championship is back—and it’s packing a field strong enough to make even the wildlife at Euphoria Golf & Lifestyle Estate pause for a look.

From 9–12 October, the Sunshine Tour’s best and brightest will tee it up for a share of the R2.5 million purse in what has become one of the most anticipated fixtures on the South African golfing calendar.

This year’s line-up is a who’s who of Sunshine Tour talent. Defending champion Deon Germishuys will return from his DP World Tour commitments to try and keep his name on the trophy for a second straight year.

He’s not just defending a title—he’s defending a record. Germishuys shot a jaw-dropping 22-under-par to claim the 2024 Limpopo crown, and he’s aiming to become only the second player in tournament history to win back-to-back, following JC Ritchie’s twin triumphs in 2019 and 2020.

They won’t make it easy for him. Two of the top three players on the Sunshine Tour’s Courier Guy Order of Merit have entered, along with seven of the past ten Tour winners this season. Add a healthy contingent of international players, and you’ve got a field that’s more loaded than a caddie’s rucksack on the 18th.

The Limpopo Championship, now in its seventh edition, has evolved from a promising regional event into a showcase of the province’s rich cultural and wildlife heritage. It’s become a flagship for Limpopo Tourism, drawing fans, players, and plenty of economic activity along with it.

“The Limpopo Tourism Agency’s partnership with the Sunshine Tour over the years to stage the Limpopo Championship continues to contribute immensely towards the agency’s mandate.

A tournament of this magnitude attracts visitors, creates employment and supports economic development. Ultimately, the tournament makes a positive difference in the lives of the local community,” said Moses Ngobeni, CEO of the Limpopo Tourism Agency.

The tournament’s rise since its 2019 debut has been steady and significant. Past winners have gone on to lift trophies on the DP World Tour, HotelPlanner Tour, and dominate the Sunshine Tour Courier Guy Order of Merit—proof that this stop in Limpopo is more than just a warm-up; it’s a launchpad.

“It is a great achievement and a proud moment for all parties involved to see the Limpopo Championship becoming a permanent fixture on the South African golfing calendar.

The strong field also includes a healthy contingency of international players,”
said Jimmy Headbush, Limpopo Championship promoter.

While Germishuys chases history, a crop of rising stars will be eager to write their own chapters. Samuel Simpson, already a Tour winner this season, and Tyran Snyders, who’s collected three top-10s to climb into the top 20 on the Order of Merit, bring youthful firepower to the fairways. If they find their rhythm early, the established names might find themselves looking over their shoulders.

The Limpopo Championship has grown into more than just a tournament—it’s a stage for emerging talent, a celebration of the region, and a reminder that golf in South Africa is thriving.

This week, all eyes will be on Euphoria.
