The opening day of the Limpopo Championship at the Euphoria Golf & Lifestyle Estate had everything: a bogey-free masterclass, a family duel, a rising star’s debut, and a good old-fashioned African thunderstorm to bring it all to a halt.
Keelan van Wyk set the early pace with a flawless five-under-par round before the heavens opened on Thursday afternoon. The elder of the two Van Wyk brothers edged younger sibling Kieron by a single stroke to grab the clubhouse lead, with Rupert Kaminski hot on their heels at four under.
Kaminski, fresh from a chilly Alfred Dunhill Links Championship in Scotland, looked equally at home in the warmer climes of Limpopo.
Play was suspended after lightning rolled in and was eventually called off just after 16:00. The first round of the Limpopo Championship will resume at 07:15 on Friday, with the second round scheduled to get underway at 10:00.
Family Rivalry with a Competitive Edge
It was a strong start from both Van Wyk brothers, though Keelan’s bogey-free card gave him the bragging rights overnight. For Kieron, this week is about far more than sibling rivalry.
The 23-year-old is in his rookie professional season and making his debut in the Limpopo Championship. He arrives with a formidable amateur résumé: the first Black golfer to win the Coastal Athletic Association (CAA) individual conference title back in 2022, and a tied-fourth finish at the PGA TOUR’s Puerto Rico Open in March while still an amateur. That kind of pedigree doesn’t just turn up to make up the numbers.
Defending Champion Lurking
Defending champion Deon Germishuys barely had time to warm up before the storms moved in. He managed to complete three holes, sitting at one under par when play was suspended. He’ll return Friday morning with the scent of a title defence still fresh.
Lightning may have delayed proceedings, but the Limpopo Championship has already served up a cracking narrative: a family battle at the top, a promising debut from a history-maker, and a defending champ ready to pounce once the weather clears.
