Masters and Open Invitations to Align in New Global Pathway for Players

Golf’s two most storied championships have finally agreed on something that will make the rest of the world feel a little less like the afterthought at a family reunion.

Augusta National Golf Club and The R&A have announced that The Masters and The Open invitations will now be aligned, awarding golden tickets to winners and top finishers of select national opens around the globe.

It’s the sort of handshake across the Atlantic that not only sharpens the competitive field but also tips a nod to the reality that golf talent is no longer confined to a handful of zip codes.

This move builds on The R&A’s Open Qualifying Series and flings the doors of Augusta and Royal Birkdale wide open to elite professionals who grind their way up through national championships.

“The Masters Tournament has long recognised the significance of having international representation among its invitees,” said Fred Ridley, Chairman of Augusta National Golf Club and the Masters Tournament. “We, along with The R&A, have a shared commitment to the global game and are proud to work together.

Today’s announcement strengthens our organisations’ collective vision of rewarding top talent around the world who rise to the top of historic national open championships.

We hope this formal recognition shines a bright light on these players and the events they will represent at the Masters and The Open, beginning next year.”

What This Means for Players

The Masters and The Open invitations aren’t just ceremonial handouts. They are genuine lifelines for golfers outside the usual PGA Tour bubble—men who might otherwise spend their careers being applauded by their mums and a loyal local gallery.

The R&A has been fine-tuning this idea since 2013 with its Open Qualifying Series, which has sent players into The Open through marquee events in far-flung corners of the golfing globe.

The new partnership ensures that the same international battlegrounds will also offer a ticket to the azalea-lined fairways of Augusta.

Mark Darbon, Chief Executive of The R&A, added: “We take great pride in the range of qualification routes we offer to players around the world through The Open Qualifying Series.

We share the same goal as Augusta National to offer places in both The Open and the Masters to players competing in national opens and by doing so to help to showcase and strengthen our sport in those regions.

This creates an outstanding opportunity for players in all parts of the world to qualify and we firmly believe this will continue to enrich the quality of the fields in both major championships.”

The Road Ahead

For 2025, players can book their spots at The 154th Open at Royal Birkdale via 15 events spread across 13 countries. Details of those tournaments, along with the exemption list, will be revealed in September.

The 2026 Masters Tournament, the 90th edition, will be played from April 6–12. Just three months later, golf’s travelling circus will roll into Royal Birkdale from July 12–19 for The Open.

By then, the first wave of international qualifiers under this new joint system will be teeing it up on the sport’s biggest stages—proving once again that a little imagination from golf’s rule-makers can change the shape of the game.
