Connor McKinney Sets the Pace with Red-Hot 62 at DP World Tour Final Stage Q-School

Connor McKinney has wasted no time announcing himself at the DP World Tour Final Stage Qualifying School, lighting up the Hills Course at INFINITUM with a flawless nine-under-par 62.

The 23-year-old Australian fired nine birdies without a blemish to open up a two-shot lead, leaving the field chasing shadows after just one round.

Trailing him are American Alex Goff, South African Zander Lombard, and Switzerland’s Cedric Gugler — all two back — but it was McKinney who set the early tone with a performance that oozed confidence and composure.

“I’m pretty stoked,” said McKinney. “I think I was in a good bit of form heading into the week, and I’d say I was pretty confident in my ability, but to pull it off at Q-School is always a good thing.”

A Start Worth Remembering

Having clawed his way through both the First and Second Stages, Connor McKinney has looked every bit the player on a mission. He opened with three birdies in his first four holes, added another trio around the turn, and then closed out with birdies on 15, 16, and 18 to underline his dominance.

“There was a lot of good stuff,” he said. “Any time you’re keeping the bogeys off the card it helps a lot. It makes the days less stressful and a little easier, and that’s what I’ve been trying to do.”

For a player whose season has been about rediscovery and steady progress, the signs are all pointing in the right direction. “During the year I really found my feet again, so everything is going to plan so far. I’m trending in the right direction.”

The Marathon Continues

McKinney knows that at Q-School, one good round means very little without endurance to back it up. With six rounds ahead and the top 20 players (plus ties) earning coveted DP World Tour cards, recovery is as crucial as putting.

“You’ve got to keep the mental side pretty sharp which goes hand in hand with not overdoing it in practice,” McKinney explained. “It’s about conserving energy out here.

A lot of guys can play out here, so it’s almost like survival of the fittest in a way. I’m going to recover after this and I think every day post-round it’ll be the same, just try to keep the body good for the next day.”

Chasers Line Up Behind

Sweden’s Oliver Gillberg, who won Second Stage Qualifying at Desert Springs Resort last week, sits fifth at six-under-par. A logjam of seven players are one shot further back at five-under, including Norway’s Andreas Halvorsen, England’s Frank Kennedy, Germany’s Jannik de Bruyn, and South Africa’s Robin Williams.

Round two of the DP World Tour Final Stage Q-School tees off at 9:00am local time, with Connor McKinney pairing up with Brazil’s Frederico Biondi Figueiredo and American Charles Huntzinger at 9:22 am.

If his opening salvo was any indication, McKinney’s intent is clear — he’s not just chasing a card, he’s chasing momentum into a new chapter.
