Celina Sattelkau Takes Three-Shot Lead into Final Round of NTT DATA Ladies Pro-Am

Germany’s Celina Sattelkau didn’t so much tiptoe into the weekend as march in wearing waterproofs and a grin, taking a commanding three-shot lead into Sunday’s final round of the NTT DATA Ladies’ Pro-Am brought to you by Standard Bank — and doing it the hard way, the fun way, and the “no thank you, bogeys” way.

With weather forcing the tournament to be shortened to 36 holes, Sattelkau made every swing count on Saturday at The Links at Fancourt, signing for a bogey-free six-under-par 67 that looked as tidy as a freshly raked bunker. In conditions that had players checking wind direction, rain intensity and their own life choices, she produced something far rarer than sunshine on the Sunshine Ladies Tour: control.

Her closest pursuer is Scotland’s Laura Beveridge, who opened with a solid 70 and will need a similarly sturdy mindset — and perhaps a few cooperative bounces — to reel in the German on a course that loves to bite back.

Sattelkau, fresh from winning last week’s SuperSport Ladies Challenge, sounded like a player who understands the difference between chasing birdies and chasing trouble. “The conditions today were pretty wet so it was pretty much target golf. It’s very different from last week. There were a lot of opportunities to make birdies, but it is a difficult course. You can make bogey pretty easy as well,” she said.

If The Links is a stern test in calm weather — and it is — then in wind and wet it becomes the sort of course that demands a clear head and an honest relationship with your golf ball. Sattelkau, for her part, treated it with respect and a touch of swagger, keeping the card clean while the elements tried to smudge it.

“I’m just really happy that I was able to get a lot of birdies and make no bogeys today. I only missed two greens and made two up-and-downs on those greens. I’m happy with how I handled this golf course mentally, especially with it being windy and wet, and with lots of blind shots.”

That last bit matters. Blind shots in gusty rain are the golfing equivalent of reversing a car at night with steamed-up windows — you can do it, but you’d rather not. Yet Sattelkau navigated them with the calm assurance of someone who’s trending in the right direction and knows it.

Back-to-back on the line — but she’s not counting anything yet

Form-wise, Sattelkau has been one of the sharpest tools in the Sunshine Ladies Tour shed this season. Her playoff win last week over Casandra Alexander at the SuperSport Ladies Challenge provided momentum; Saturday’s 67 at the NTT DATA Pro-Am provided a statement.

Still, she’s keeping the emotional reins tight, refusing to let a hot streak turn into a hot head.

“I don’t know what will happen tomorrow. I just want to stay patient, stay in the moment and have fun. I will focus on what I can control. I am trusting in my game and my abilities,” Sattekau said.

It’s the kind of talk you hear from players who’ve learned that Sunday doesn’t care what you did on Saturday — and that a three-shot lead can feel either comforting or claustrophobic, depending on how you carry it.

The chasing pack: Beveridge closest as five share third

Behind Sattelkau and Beveridge, the leaderboard tightens like a rain jacket around the shoulders. There’s a five-way tie for third place on two under par, featuring a strong South African presence with Caitlyn Macnab, Kaiyuree Moodley and Gabrielle Venter all in the mix.

With the tournament compressed and the margins suddenly thinner, Sunday’s finale at the NTT DATA Pro-Am has the ingredients for a proper scrap: a leader in form, a course with teeth, and a forecast that’s already had its say.

All that’s left is 18 holes, a few brave decisions, and the small matter of keeping the golf ball dry — or at least pretending it is.
