Sei Young Kim Sets Relentless Pace at BMW Ladies Championship as Record Falls

The BMW Ladies Championship is starting to look less like a golf tournament and more like a one-woman campaign of controlled demolition — and its architect is Sei Young Kim.

The world No. 21 fired a second-round 66 to reach 16-under-par, tying the 36-hole tournament scoring record at 128 and tightening her grip on the leaderboard like a vice.

Seven birdies, one bogey, and nerves of surgical steel. That’s been Kim’s output through 36 holes at Pine Beach Golf Links, and it’s sent an unmistakable message to the rest of the field: catch me if you can — if you dare. In fact, she’s dropped just a single shot over two days. That’s not golf; that’s precision engineering.

“So it seems that we are getting a lot of birdies on this course,” Kim said, sounding like someone commenting on the weather rather than playing sublime golf. “So tomorrow and the day after tomorrow, it’s important to get the birdies as much as possible.

I hope to keep my play style as I did for the first day. Of course, there’s a lot of pressure on the third and fourth day, but it’s not just me. Everyone will have the same pressure. But I just want to accept the fact and enjoy the rest of the tournament.”

Enjoy it? The rest of us are clinging on for dear life.

Brooke Matthews Means Business

Hot on her heels — and showing no intention of being a supporting character — is Brooke Matthews. The American caught fire on Friday with a sizzling 64, the lowest round of her LPGA Tour career. Eight birdies, no bogeys, just pure confidence.

“Yeah, it’s kind of funny, I didn’t feel very comfortable coming into this week,” said Matthews. “Even Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday was feeling a little eh but made me go out there and play it shot-by-shot, lower expectations and I feel like I just managed it really well.”

That 129 total through two rounds is not only her best ever 36-hole score, it also puts her just one shot off Kim’s lead — and in striking distance heading into the weekend at the BMW Ladies Championship.

Nine-Under Madness from Linn Grant

If anyone needed reminding that this course can be ripped to shreds, Linn Grant obliged. The Swede unleashed a fearless nine-under 63 — the round of the day — featuring seven birdies, an eagle, and a blistering 30 coming home.

The wind blew, the pressure rose, and she casually carved up Pine Beach like she’d built the place.

Familiar Faces, Familiar Fire

  • Defending champion Hannah Green is lurking at T22 after rounds of 68–69.
  • Chella Choi, back from maternity leave, sits T36 and clearly loving life. “Super site excited…I’m happy to see people and fans and play again,” she said.
  • And this week marks the emotional farewell of Eun-Hee Ji. The 38-year-old, set to retire after the tournament, is currently T46 after a 71. Her smile suggested she doesn’t plan to go quietly.

The Stats Behind the Storm

Kim’s lead shouldn’t surprise anyone who glanced at her CV:

  • 12 LPGA Tour wins
  • 77 career top-10s
  • Over $14.8 million in career earnings
  • Three-time LPGA award winner
  • Olympian for South Korea in 2016 and 2020

This is also the 18th time she has led or co-led after 36 holes on the LPGA Tour. She’s gone on to win nine of those tournaments. If you’re doing the maths, that’s a 50% conversion rate. Tiger territory.

She also tied her lowest 36-hole total — a number last seen at the 2018 Thornberry Creek LPGA Classic, where she also won. You don’t need a psychic to see where this is going.

Wind, Wires and Nerves: It’s Going to Get Wild

Celine Boutier, tied sixth at 10-under, said the shifting breeze made club selection a lottery. “I didn’t really know what to expect with the weather… It’s definitely playing kind of challenging with the wind sometimes going in different directions.”

Translation: Day three won’t be for the faint-hearted.

Leaderboard Pressure Cooker

With birdies available and egos on the line, the weekend at the BMW Ladies Championship is shaping up beautifully. Kim has the experience. Matthews has the momentum. Grant has the firepower. Green has the history. Ji has legacy.

The plot is thick. The putters are hot. And the golf? It’s ruthless.

Buckle up.
