Van Wyk, Snyders in the Mix as Sunbet Challenge Heads for a Nail-Biting Finish

The Sunbet Challenge at Umhlali Country Club has delivered a leaderboard tighter than a Scotsman’s wallet, with five players—including fresh-faced youngsters Benjamin van Wyk and Tyran Snyders—tied at the top heading into Friday’s final round.

Van Wyk, barely out of his college dorms in America, signed for a sizzling 64, while Snyders kept his cool with a 67. They joined seasoned campaigners Jaco Prinsloo (67), Louis Albertse (66) and Pieter Moolman (65) on six under par, a single shot clear of a chasing pack that looks more like a cavalry charge than a golf tournament.

For Van Wyk, this week’s Sunbet Challenge is another step in what already feels like a whirlwind debut on the Sunshine Tour. Just a month after finishing sixth on the Vodacom Origins of Golf series, the youngster finds himself sniffing at a maiden title.

“I had an awesome day with my caddie, Jeff. I think I made 19 putts, which is by far the least I’ve had. I hit some good iron shots after I made a slight swing adjustment before the round. I’m really enjoying it. Playing pro golf is a lot of fun. It’s nice to be on the Sunshine Tour to see what I can do,” he said.

Snyders, meanwhile, looks like a man who’s already cracked the code. With three top-12 finishes in his last four outings, he’s edging closer to that breakthrough moment.

“Life on the Sunshine Tour so far has been fun. It’s almost full circle as I’m meeting up with old friends again. I try not to make golf bigger than it is. It’s the same game I’ve played as a youngster,” he said.

Friday’s finale is shaping up like a Wild West shootout. Seventeen players are bunched within three shots of the lead, including last week’s winner Haydn Porteous, who no doubt has the scent of back-to-back victories in his nostrils.

Van Wyk is relishing the chaos. “I always like a stacked leaderboard. It makes it fun to watch,” he said. “I’ll just stick to my routine and try and keep it simple and try to make lots of putts. I am super excited.”

Snyders, though, prefers the steady hand approach, even if it sounds about as thrilling as beige wallpaper. “On this course there are a lot of guys that are still in it. I will just focus on what I can do and play like I did today – almost boring golf and take advantage of opportunities,” he said.

One thing is certain: the Sunbet Challenge has set the stage for a Friday finish that promises drama, birdies, and more than a few nerves jangling on the greens of Umhlali.
