Im, Fitzpatrick and Hillier Among Eight Tied at Genesis Championship Halfway Mark

At the halfway point of the Genesis Championship, Sungjae Im reminded everyone why he’s one of South Korea’s brightest golfing stars. With a composed four-under-par 67 at Woo Jeong Hills, the 2019 champion clawed his way into a share of the lead — a position he knows all too well.

Im’s card was as tidy as his tempo, dotted with six birdies and just enough restraint to keep the big numbers off the board. “I think I was playing much better overall today.

I was really making the shots that I intended,” said the two-time PGA TOUR winner. “Looking back at my game, I think I was aggressive when I needed to be and I played safe when I needed to. My strategy was really good today.”

The Genesis Championship leaderboard is starting to look like an international roll call. Im is joined at six-under-par by compatriots Junghwan Lee and Minhyuk Song, alongside Nacho Elvira of Spain, England’s Alex Fitzpatrick, New Zealand’s Daniel Hillier, China’s Haotong Li, and France’s Tom Vaillant.

Eight players share the top spot — and the weekend promises the kind of volatility that could make Woo Jeong Hills feel like a minefield.

For Hillier and Li, this week means more than just another trophy chase. Both are vying for PGA TOUR dual membership, currently sitting inside the top ten of the Race to Dubai Rankings.

Elvira and Vaillant, meanwhile, are scrapping for a ticket to the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship, the opening act of the DP World Tour Play-Offs in a fortnight’s time.

“The goal for all the DP World Tour members is to play in the final series in Abu Dhabi and especially Dubai,” said Elvira. “Getting there would be great… but the honest truth is we are trying to stick to our game plan, build things for next season.”

Alex Fitzpatrick, who’s quietly piecing together one of the steadiest campaigns of his young career, echoed a similar theme after his round of consistency. “I played pretty nicely, to be honest,” he said. “I drove it a lot better than yesterday so I found myself in a few more fairways. Just trying to capitalise on the last couple of weeks and keep momentum for the weekend.”

And then there’s Daniel Hillier, who seems to have mastered the art of patience. “It’s a course where you feel like you should be able to shoot a good score, but if you bite off more than you can chew you can get caught out quickly,” he explained. “Thankfully I managed to snag one on the last to put me in position.”

As the Genesis Championship heads into moving day, the math is merciless. The top 70 players on the Race to Dubai Rankings after this event will advance to Yas Links, while the top 115 will secure playing rights for 2026. Adam Scott, who started the week hanging by a thread at 115th, has steadied the ship. Sitting at one-under in a tie for 44th, the Australian veteran now looks poised to keep his card for next season.

The air at Woo Jeong Hills is getting heavy with pressure and opportunity in equal measure. Im’s calm, methodical precision has put him right where he wants to be — and if history is any guide, he won’t be easy to budge.
