Tyrone Ryan came out swinging at the Blu Label Unlimited Challenge, embracing its modified Stableford format like a man who’d just been told eagles were worth extra bragging rights — and they were.
By the end of Wednesday’s first round, Ryan stood alone at the top of the leaderboard on 22 points, setting the pace across both the Gary Player Country Club and Lost City Golf Club layouts.
Starting on the 10th hole at the storied Gary Player Country Club, Ryan pieced together a round that was as bold as it was precise, carving out a commanding nine-point lead.
And in a format that rewards courage over caution, he was more than happy to play on the front foot.
“It’s just such an amazing place with so much history behind it. The greats of the game have walked these fairways,” Ryan said. “The format is nice in the sense that you need to be making birdies and eagles, so you need to be aggressive without shooting yourself in the foot. I’m always having birdie in the back of my mind in some shape or form.”
Ryan’s opening round read like a highlight reel. He holed out for eagle on his ninth — with the same club he used for a hole-in-one just last week at the Fortress Invitational, where he finished tied fourth — and backed it up with another chip-in eagle on his 10th. From there, it was a birdie bonanza: four more on the 13th, 15th, 16th, and 17th.
That Fortress finish clearly gave him momentum, and he’s riding it hard into this week’s Blu Label Unlimited Challenge, eyeing a second Sunshine Tour victory to add to his 2017 breakthrough.
“My golf’s been good for a while now, but I just haven’t been able to put it all together,” he said. “Last week showed that patience, perseverance and good thinking on the golf course can go a long way. My short game and putting got better, and it showed today on the scorecard.”
While Ryan’s fireworks lit up the leaderboard, a couple of familiar names weren’t far behind. Hennie du Plessis marked a strong return to the Tour after an extended injury layoff, carding 13 points to join Keenan Davidse as Ryan’s closest challengers.
As round one of the Blu Label Unlimited Challenge closed under the Sun City skies, Ryan’s mix of flair and focus set the tone. With the format rewarding risk-takers and punishing hesitation, one thing’s certain — this week’s leaderboard won’t favour the faint-hearted.
