Vodacom Origins of Golf fans barely had time to settle into their seats before Christiaan Burke lit up Pezula Golf Estate with a nine-under-par masterclass that set the standard on Thursday.
The Sunshine Tour young gun has spent weeks simmering, and the first round of the Vodacom Origins of Golf Final proved to be the moment he brought the boil.
The course was playing pure, the greens rolling smoother than a salesman on commission, and Burke took full advantage. His opening 63 gave him a one-shot edge over Keenan Davidse, CJ du Plessis and Alexander Knappe—three men who will not take kindly to being cast as supporting characters.
Burke opened with calm authority, turning in four under. Then came his only blemish of the day at the 10th—a polite reminder from the golf gods not to get ahead of himself. He obeyed, briefly, before ransacking the back nine with six birdies in eight holes.
“The course is in great condition. The greens are really good. I hit fairways and greens today, but my putting in particular has been really good the last few weeks. So I know if I can give myself chances I can make putts,” said Burke.
He’s not bluffing. Burke has been one of the Sunshine Tour’s steadiest performers of late, finishing no worse than 18th in his last five starts and fresh off a runner-up finish at the Stella Artois Players Championship. You don’t fluke that kind of consistency—you build it.
“I’ve been playing well the last few weeks. My coach and I have been working hard on my swing and it’s paying off now. It’s just about confidence at the moment. I’m playing off a lot of confidence and the game is feeling good. I can’t wait for the rest of the week,” he added.
While Burke hogged the spotlight, Jean Hugo—the seasoned sheriff of the Vodacom Origins of Golf Series—lurks just three back. With 12 victories on this circuit, Hugo’s relationship with this event is somewhere between ‘comfortable’ and ‘borderline ownership’.
The series, born in 2004, has shaped the careers of countless Sunshine Tour stalwarts, and Hugo has been its most reliable headline act.
Beyond the professional scrap, the pro-am heartbeat of the series continues to thrive. This year’s amateur contest was fiercely competitive, and KwaZulu-Natal businessman Neelesh Sitlu emerged victorious, claiming the overall 2025 Vodacom Origins of Golf Series crown.
“I’m still in shock. It’s an amazing series. The networking is great and the people are wonderful. As amateurs it really gives us a look into what the professionals go through. It as close as we can ever come to experiencing that, and this is one of the premier events in the country that allows us to feel this,” said the Mount Edgecombe resident.
With Burke brimming with confidence, Hugo prowling, and the field packed with players capable of firing low, the weekend promises a proper showdown.
The Vodacom Origins of Golf Final rarely disappoints—and this year is shaping up to be no exception.
