Rookie Rampage: Warwick Purchase Shoots 62 to Take Control

The Fortress Invitational is supposed to be a test of patience and precision. Nobody told Warwick Purchase. The Sunshine Tour rookie scorched Glendower Golf Club with a ruthless third-round 10-under-par 62, storming into the final day with a three-shot lead that looked as effortless as a stroll down the practice range.

Purchase stands at 17-under-par heading into Sunday’s finale, but this wasn’t just another good round—it was a statement.

His front nine was the stuff of bar-room legend: a sizzling 28, featuring six birdies and an eagle that would have made Aladdin proud. The card showed nine birdies, one eagle, and a solitary bogey—because even golf likes to remind you who’s in charge.

Behind him, Kyle Barker kept the pressure simmering with a composed 66 to sit at 14-under, while Daniel van Tonder (69) and Tyrone Ryan (68) lurk at 12-under, both close enough to ruin the fairy tale. If drama was on the tournament menu, Saturday served it hot.

Barker and Ryan both aced par-threes—yes, two holes-in-one in one day—just in case anyone thought this Fortress Invitational was going to follow a script.

“Today’s round was pretty insane and probably the best of my life, especially that front-nine,” said Purchase, who looked less like a rookie and more like a man who’d finally found the keys to the cheat codes.

“I wasn’t thinking too much and was just hitting golf shots. The next minute I shot 28 on the front nine. I also managed to keep it really solid on the back nine, which was playing a bit tougher. Overall, it was a good day where my mindset was perfect.”

It hasn’t been plain sailing for the 23-year-old. Purchase arrived at Glendower after missing four consecutive cuts—proof that progress in golf rarely goes in straight lines. His second-round 71 looked streaky, but instead of sulking, he went back to work. Hard.

“I didn’t have a great putting round on Friday so I did quite a bit of practice after the round. My swing also fell into a nice groove today and I decided to be a bit braver and play more aggressively.”

That boldness paid off. Confident lines, fearless irons, and a putter that suddenly rediscovered its manners—Purchase looked like a man who finally stopped waiting for permission to compete.

Now comes the real test. Pressure. Expectation. The Sunday spotlight. Purchase sits in the top 10 on the Fortress Rookie of the Year standings, but this is new territory—leading a Sunshine Tour event going into a final round. And if he wants a first win, he’ll have to take it the hard way—while paired with two proven campaigners in van Tonder and Barker.

“It’s foreign territory for me on the Sunshine Tour, so I think a little bit of thought needs to go into my gameplan and on how I will handle the nerves, as there will definitely be some.

I’ll be playing with two big names on the Sunshine Tour – Daniel (Van Tonder) and Kyle (Barker) – so the goal will be to get myself into my own little bubble and not worry about what’s going on around me.”

If Purchase can bottle whatever he found on Saturday, the Fortress Invitational might just produce a new champion with a new story—one that proves form comes and goes, but courage shows up when you let it.

Glendower is setting the stage. Sunday will decide who can handle the heat. Warwick Purchase has already lit the fire.
