Howden Invests in England Golf’s Play Safe, Stay Safe Campaign

In a move that’s less about chasing birdies and more about sleeping at night, England Golf has signed a three-year deal with global insurance heavyweight Howden, naming the broker its Official Insurance Partner through to the end of 2028. It’s insurance, yes – but the kind that quietly underpins every tee shot, club championship and wayward drive onto the wrong fairway.

The partnership brings together two organisations preaching from the same hymn sheet: safe, sustainable and accessible golf for anyone daft enough to fall in love with the game. For England Golf, it’s a flagship appointment in a strategy built around long-term, values-driven relationships rather than a quick logo on a leaderboard and a handshake for the cameras.

Who are Howden and why do they matter to golfers?

Howden isn’t some back-room broker in a strip mall trying to spell “golf” correctly on the policy. Headquartered in London and operating in 57 countries, the group is recognised worldwide for its specialist insurance and risk-services expertise.

They already move in serious sporting circles: think British & Irish Lions, Emirates Great Britain SailGP Team, the Lawn Tennis Association and Ascot Racecourse. Add a strong sustainability focus, and you’ve got a company that wants to be seen not just on the big stage, but also in the communities where people actually play sport – which is exactly where England Golf lives and breathes.

That existing footprint in sport gives England Golf a powerful platform to broaden its influence and talk directly to an audience that understands the value of proper protection, not just a lucky ball marker.

What this means for club golfers and iGolf subscribers

At the heart of the agreement is something golfers don’t think about until they absolutely have to: liability and cover when things go wrong.

Under the new deal, Howden will continue as the broker arranging £10 million public liability insurance for every England Golf club member and iGolf subscriber. That’s the safety net for the moments when a golf ball develops a mind of its own and heads towards something that says “Do Not Hit Me” in very large letters.

On top of that, a new scheme will give golfers the option to bolt on additional personal cover for things like theft and overseas travel. In other words, if your clubs go for an unscheduled city break without you, or you’re playing abroad and disaster strikes, there’ll be an opportunity to have that properly insured.

This added layer is designed to dovetail neatly with the existing cover – a seamless upgrade, not a complete rewrite – so golfers can clearly see the extra value and protection they’re unlocking. Access will be via Howden’s dedicated England Golf insurance centre, giving members a single, recognisable hub for all the fine print that keeps the game moving.

“An excellent fit” – Howden on partnering with England Golf

For Howden, this isn’t a toe in the water; it’s a deliberate stride further into amateur and grassroots sport.

Andy Goulbourne, Divisional Director, Sport and Entertainment at Howden, said:
“England Golf is an excellent fit for Howden. Our experience working with more than 300 national governing bodies gives us a deep understanding of clients’ insurance and risk management requirements. This partnership strengthens our commitment to amateur and grassroots sport even further.

“As part of our role, we will be arranging protection for England Golf members and iGolf subscribers, supported by our sector-leading expertise and a dedicated team — including specialist claims handlers — to assist members whenever they need us.”

That’s the crux of it: not just a policy document in a drawer, but a specialist team on hand when things go sideways – from minor mishaps to the sort of claim that makes your captain go pale.

Play Safe, Stay Safe – safety pushed up the agenda

The partnership isn’t only about insurance limits and legalese. Howden will also invest directly in England Golf’s Play Safe, Stay Safe campaign, which focuses on creating and maintaining safe golfing environments.

That means strengthening joint efforts to improve safeguarding, education and awareness across clubs and communities – from juniors and new golfers to volunteers, coaches and committee members who keep the club running between bar shifts.

In practical terms, you can expect more support and resources for clubs looking to tighten up best practice, more emphasis on education, and a clearer understanding of what “safe golf” actually looks like in the real world.

From HQ to the halfway hut – local support across the UK & Ireland

With 200 branches and office locations across the UK & Ireland, Howden aren’t approaching this as a distant, centralised exercise. The plan is to use that footprint to build meaningful, local relationships with affiliated clubs, offering tailored support and real-world advice.

For England Golf, that grassroots presence is a big part of the appeal. It means clubs aren’t just pointing questions at a faceless inbox; they can connect with people who understand the local landscape as well as the risk register.

A partnership built on protecting and growing the game

England Golf Chief Executive Jeremy Tomlinson believes the agreement does more than simply tick an insurance box.

“Howden’s scale, expertise and commitment to community sport make them an ideal partner as we continue to support golfers and clubs across the country,” he said.

“Their investment in Play Safe, Stay Safe and their desire to engage locally will bring real value to our members. The partnership marks a significant step forward in England Golf’s mission to champion a safe, inclusive and thriving future for the sport.”

In other words, this is as much about the future shape of the game as it is about today’s paperwork. With Howden on board, England Golf is shoring up the foundations – making sure that as participation grows, the infrastructure keeping golfers protected grows with it.

A little sweetener: a prize draw for golfers

Because no modern partnership launch is complete without a bit of swag, Howden are marking the occasion with a prize draw. One lucky winner will walk away with a bundle of golfing goodies worth over £1,000, featuring Titleist and FootJoy equipment and clothing, while 10 runners-up will each pick up a dozen Titleist Pro V1s. The draw is open to over-18s only.

It’s a neat reminder that while the headlines here are about risk and responsibility, there’s still plenty of room for the fun side of the game – the new gear, the fresh Pro V1s, the sense that someone is looking after you while you go hunting for greens in regulation.

The bottom line

Strip away the corporate polish and you’re left with something simple: a global broker with serious sporting credentials tying up with England Golf to protect golfers, strengthen club environments and support the game from the grassroots up.

You might never read the policy wording. You’ll definitely notice if you ever need it. And in the background, this three-year deal quietly helps ensure that the next generation of English golfers can swing away knowing the game they love is a little safer, smarter and better protected than it was yesterday.
