The England Golf Spirit International team has been named for November’s title defence at Whispering Pines Golf Club in Texas, and subtlety has not been overworked.

U.S. Amateur champion Jack Whaley and European Ladies’ Amateur champion Charlotte Naughton join Tyler Weaver and Sophia Fullbrook for the 10-15 November championship.

England won the overall title in 2024; this quartet has been selected to make sure the trophy is not surrendered through excessive politeness.

Jack Whaley and Tyler Weaver bring serious US pedigree

Whaley arrives with the freshest headline. The 22-year-old from Rotherham won the 2026 U.S. Amateur Championship, becoming only the third Englishman to do so and earning exemptions into major golf tournaments in 2027.

That success sits on top of a substantial American record. In 2025 he won the Coastal Georgia Men’s Golf Fall Invitational, Kinderlou Forest Spring Invite, BMCU Spring Classic, Roadrunner Classic and NAIA Men’s Golf National Championship.

His 2026 season has also produced top-10 finishes at the Lewis Chitengwa Invitational, ACC Championships and NCAA Columbus Regional. There are quieter ways to submit a selection case, presumably.

Weaver, 21, has his own persuasive file. He won the 2026 Valspar Collegiate Invitational after finishing second at the Seminole Intercollegiate and recording top-five finishes at both the Jones Cup Invitational and Watersound Invitational.

More strikingly, he qualified for the 2025 US Open, finishing tied-79th, and represented Great Britain & Ireland at the Walker Cup at Cypress Point. England are not sending two men to Texas to discover what American tournament golf feels like.

Charlotte Naughton arrives with a European title

Naughton’s selection is equally difficult to argue with.

The 18-year-old from Longhirst Hall won the 2026 European Ladies’ Amateur Championship, securing a place in the 2026 AIG Women’s Open. She also won the 2026 Junior Orange Bowl with a four-round tournament record of 10 under.

Her progress had already been conspicuous. Naughton took the individual title at the 2025 World Junior Girls Golf Championship and became the first English winner of the German Girls’ International Amateur that same year.

There is team evidence, too. She won all five of her matches as England claimed the 2026 Women’s Home Internationals, helped England win bronze at the European Ladies’ Team Championship and represented Great Britain & Ireland at the 2026 Curtis Cup.

Sophia Fullbrook adds victories and match-play substance

Fullbrook, 20, has spent 2026 collecting both trophies and points.

She won the Florida State Match-Up, Coach Mo Classic and NCAA Tallahassee Regional in the United States, while taking four points from five for Great Britain & Ireland at the Curtis Cup.

For England, she won five of six points unbeaten as the women claimed the 2026 Home Internationals and also helped the side win bronze at the European Ladies’ Team Championship.

Individual results make selectors interested. Repeatedly delivering while wearing team colours tends to make the conversation shorter.

England have recent history to defend at Whispering Pines

England return as overall champions after winning the last Spirit International in 2024. Dominic Clemons and Matthew Dodd-Berry also helped England finish tied first in the men’s event that year.

The longer record provides some useful perspective. England have won the overall title three times in the 11 events staged since the competition began in 2001. Success is familiar, then, without becoming tedious.

“The strength of the international field, and the unique format of the competition held over one of the most challenging golf courses in the U.S., guarantees a competitive environment for our players like no other they will experience in their early careers.

In Charlotte, Sophia, Jack and Tyler we have selected a team capable of putting up the strongest defence possible following our win in 2024.”

England’s selection leaves little room for excuses

The telling detail is not simply that all four players have impressive individual records. Each has also accumulated meaningful team experience.

Whaley brings the U.S. Amateur title. Naughton brings the European Ladies’ Amateur. Fullbrook brings collegiate victories, Curtis Cup points and an unbeaten Home Internationals record. Weaver brings a Walker Cup appearance, a US Open start and an extensive collection of international team results.

Paper strength guarantees nothing, particularly in amateur golf, where careers can move at indecent speed and November is a long way from August.

But England have picked four players with recent reasons to expect plenty of themselves. Texas gets to decide whether that expectation travels.
