Fortress Invitational 2025: The Pay Day That’s Changing South African Golf

If the Fortress Invitational was a cocktail, this year’s recipe would be heavy on the top-shelf stuff. The Sunshine Tour’s October showpiece at Glendower Golf Club is turning up the heat in 2025 with a prize purse now sitting at a very healthy R2.5 million — that’s R1 million more than when the event first teed off in 2022.

And because one good swing deserves another, the Fortress Rookie of the Year award is also getting a major bump. The top newcomer on the Sunshine Tour will now pocket R400,000, exactly twice what last season’s bright young thing received.

“This year, the Fortress Invitational is powering growth in South African golf at every level with an increased prize purse and a doubling of the Fortress Rookie of the Year prize in a continued show of our support for emerging talent.

It’s all part of our commitment to growing the game, backing today’s top competitors, and paving the way for the future of South African golf on the Sunshine Tour, while investing in our brand,” said Steven Brown, CEO of Fortress Real Estate Investments.

Big Money, Bigger Stage

The 2025 Fortress Invitational Trophy

The four-day event, running from 16-19 October, isn’t just about cash — though you’d be forgiven for thinking otherwise with a purse like that. It’s part of a Sunshine Tour schedule now boasting over 30 tournaments and nearly R200 million in total prize money.

And it’s no provincial backwater; Sunshine Tour pros are playing for tickets to the DP World Tour, the HotelPlanner Tour, and exemptions into golf’s Major championships.

Thomas Abt, Commissioner of the Sunshine Tour, knows a golden opportunity when he sees one. “Fortress has been a valuable partner over the past four years and we’re extremely proud to announce not only the continued support of the Fortress Invitational on our schedule, but at the same time a further endorsement of the Sunshine Tour’s international status as a tour of opportunity.

The additional support of Fortress for our leading Fortress Rookie of the Year is an equally strong investment in the development of new talent on our fairways,” Abt said.

Launchpad for Stars

The Fortress Invitational has a knack for turning fresh faces into household names. Just ask Robin Williams — no, not that one — the South African prodigy who’s now plying his trade on the DP World Tour.

Williams lifted the Fortress Invitational trophy in both 2023 and 2024 and scooped the Fortress Rookie of the Year title during the 2023/24 season.

This October, Glendower Golf Club could once again be the springboard for the next South African golf star. With the prize money fatter and the stakes higher, expect the fairways to be as cutthroat as they are manicured.
