African Golf gains a new date this September as the Sunshine Tour stages the inaugural Rwanda Open at Kigali Golf Club from 24–27 September 2026. The R2.5 million event will be the Tour’s first in Rwanda, with live SuperSport coverage and a field blending established professionals with players still trying to earn their way into bigger rooms.

The Sunshine Tour already visits Zambia, Zimbabwe, Eswatini, Kenya and Uganda. Rwanda joins that footprint as the Tour’s Strategic Alliance with the DP World Tour and PGA TOUR gives regional events a place on a broader competitive ladder.

Golf rarely makes advancement look simple. Still, a sanctioned event in Kigali offers Rwandan players a home tournament, television exposure and direct contact with professionals accustomed to earning a living one nervy putt at a time.

A field built around access

The line-up is expected to include Sunshine Tour professionals, Rwandan professionals, leading amateurs and players from elsewhere in Africa. A tournament can call itself continental; a genuinely mixed field has to prove it.

The stated pathway runs towards the HotelPlanner Tour, then the DP World Tour and, at the far end, the PGA TOUR. Thomas Abt, Commissioner of the Sunshine Tour, placed the Rwanda Open within that longer project.

“We are extremely proud to be partnering with Visit Rwanda in their golf and tourism objectives through the new Rwanda Open. It’s exciting for us to be able to keep growing the game in Africa and helping to provide life-changing opportunities for African golfers to realise their dreams of playing on the biggest stages in the game,” said Abt.

Kigali gets the television window

SuperSport’s live coverage extends the event beyond the gallery ropes. For the tournament, that brings visibility. For Kigali, it turns the course into a tourism showcase without requiring the usual brochure language.

The partnership includes Visit Rwanda, the Rwanda Ministry of Sports and the Rwanda Golf Union. The event also joins a national sporting portfolio that includes the 2025 UCI Road World Championships, the Basketball Africa League, the 2023 FIFA Congress, FIFA Series 2026 and the 2024 FIA Awards.

“Rwanda is positioning itself as one of Africa’s leading destinations for world-class sporting events, having successfully hosted the 2025 UCI Road World Championships, the Basketball Africa League since its inaugural season in 2021, the 2023 FIFA Congress and FIFA Series 2026, and the 2024 FIA Awards. We are delighted to welcome the Sunshine Tour to Rwanda for the inaugural Rwanda Open, adding another landmark event to our growing portfolio of world-class sporting events.

“We look forward to welcoming players, their families, and golf fans from around the world to experience not only the tournament, but also Rwanda’s warm hospitality, breathtaking landscapes, unique wildlife, vibrant culture, and unforgettable experiences. Whether before or after the championship, visitors will discover there is so much more to explore across the Land of a Thousand Hills,” said Janet Karemera, Chief Executive Officer, Rwanda Convention Bureau.

Sport and tourism share the fairway

The Rwanda Open is being positioned as more than four days of tournament golf. Travelling players, support teams, broadcasters and spectators extend its value beyond the scorecard, while the event gives Rwanda’s recent investment in golf an international shop window.

“The Rwanda Open 2026 represents another significant milestone in Rwanda’s journey to becoming a leading destination for international sporting events. As the country’s first Sunshine Tour-sanctioned tournament, it reflects our commitment to developing golf, creating opportunities for our athletes, and using sport as a catalyst for tourism, economic growth and international engagement. We are proud to support this historic event and look forward to welcoming players and visitors from across Africa and around the world to Kigali,” said the Honourable Nelly Mukazayire, Minister of Sports.

The wider African Golf wager

The most persuasive element is not the purse, the cameras or the novelty of a new host nation. It is the attempt to make African golf less dependent on geography. Talent is scattered across the continent; opportunity is not always so obliging.

One tournament will not repair that imbalance. It can create a credible stage, place local players beside seasoned professionals and give sponsors and broadcasters a reason to return. Kigali has its date. The interesting part begins when the first tee shot leaves the clubface.
