Kent’s Women Deliver Under Pressure At Worthing GC

Kent have been crowned Women’s County Match Week champions for 2026 after an unbeaten run at Worthing Golf Club, sealing the title with a composed 3-2 victory over Hampshire and earning a place in the County Finals at Betchworth Park at the end of July.

There are easier ways to spend a heatwave than grinding through elite county matchplay, but Kent appear to have mistaken soaring temperatures for a motivational speech.

Across a demanding week in the England Golf South Region County Match Week, the side found just enough steel, touch and stubbornness to keep the scoreboard moving in the right direction.

Kent Seal The Title With Hampshire Victory

The final match against Hampshire had all the ingredients of proper county golf: tight margins, frayed nerves, and the sort of pressure that makes even a two-footer look as though it has been designed by a committee.

Kent, though, did what good teams do. They found points when they mattered and closed the week with another 3-2 win, completing an unbeaten run against the women’s 1st teams of Surrey, Sussex, Hampshire and Middlesex.

The decisive points came from Ali Ord of Canterbury and Teagan Ford of Prince’s, who won 2 up; Ally Mitchell of Prince’s, who also won 2 up; and Ellena Slater of Kings Hill, who delivered a more emphatic 4&3 victory.

The Points That Made The Difference

In matchplay, the scoreboard rarely tells the full story. A 3-2 result can look neat in print, but it often contains a week’s worth of small battles: a holed putt here, a stubborn half there, a player refusing to blink when the match begins to creak.

For Kent, those winning contributions against Hampshire were the final proof of a squad that had grown into the week rather than merely survived it.

The points came from:

  • Ali Ord (Canterbury) & Teagan Ford (Prince’s) – 2 up
  • Ally Mitchell (Prince’s) – 2 up
  • Ellena Slater (Kings Hill) – 4&3

That spread of results matters. It was not a one-player rescue act or a single flash of brilliance. It was a collective performance, the sort county teams depend on when the week gets long, the sun gets rude, and the opposition refuses to go quietly.

Nicki Ball Praises Kent’s Collective Nerve

Kent Golf Women’s 1st Team Manager Nicki Ball captured the mood after a week in which her side were repeatedly asked uncomfortable questions and kept producing answers.

“The week was full of tight contests, and the Kent team met every challenge head-on and found an answer. On and off the course, I couldn’t have been prouder of the team, and we are excited to be able to do it all again in a few weeks time at Betchworth Park.”

That line about “finding an answer” is the essence of good matchplay. There is no hiding place in county golf. The format exposes weak patches, momentum swings and the occasional bout of emotional weather. Kent handled the lot.

Heatwave Golf, Hydration And A Very Useful Kit Bag

The conditions were not merely warm. They were the kind of hot that turns a golf bag into portable luggage with opinions. Kent’s success owed plenty to the players, but the wider support network also had its fingerprints on the trophy.

The team thanked the Kent Golf office for its organisation and efficiency, while coaches Steve Mitchell and Tim Milford were recognised for their guidance and support throughout the competition.

Ingrid Long and Marilyn Brown were also singled out for keeping the players hydrated and fuelled during the heatwave. In weeks like this, water bottles and sensible snacks can be as important as a well-struck iron. Glamorous? Not especially. Essential? Completely.

Kent also paid tribute to the supporters who travelled to Worthing Golf Club, with their backing proving valuable during a week of close contests.

Peter Millar Support Proves Timely

The team also acknowledged Peter Millar, whose performance apparel was put through a rather severe summer stress test.

“Our thanks also go to Peter Millar. The kit was exceptional in the heatwave—keeping us comfortable while looking great throughout the competition.”

It is not often golf clothing gets judged under conditions better suited to a greenhouse, but Kent clearly appreciated having kit that did its job without adding another battle to the day.

County Finals Await At Betchworth Park

Kent’s reward is a place at the County Finals at Betchworth Park at the end of July, where the standard will rise again and the margins are unlikely to become any more generous.

The team also thanked Worthing GC and Team Sussex for their organisation of the week, acknowledging the work behind an event that brings together the South Region’s leading county sides.

For Kent, the next task is simple in theory and awkward in practice: carry the same edge, unity and calm into the finals. They have earned the right to arrive with confidence. Whether confidence behaves itself when the first tee comes calling is another matter entirely.

Still, an unbeaten Women’s County Match Week title is a fine way to pack for Betchworth Park. Kent have the trophy, the momentum and, judging by Worthing, a useful habit of finding the answer before anyone else has finished asking the question.
