Johannes Veerman, the quietly confident American who turned heads in 2024 with a win that mixed calm composure with last-day chaos, is headed back to Sun City this December to defend his title at the Nedbank Golf Challenge — South Africa’s glitziest golfing showdown, played in honour of the great Gary Player.
The 33-year-old Veerman is hoping to pull off a feat rarer than polite gallery silence — a successful title defence.
Only seven men in the tournament’s storied history have done it. Just one of them, Jim Furyk, carried an American passport.
Now, Johannes Veerman is looking to become the second. And if last year’s drama is anything to go by, the popcorn will sell itself.
Veerman is the first player officially confirmed for the 2025 edition of what many call “Africa’s Major”, returning to the scene of his career-defining triumph at the Gary Player Country Club from 4-7 December.
Tickets and hospitality passes are now up for grabs — and if you’re going, don’t sleep on the HospitaliTEE Lounge, which sounds like a pun but delivers like a Pro V1.
Think: premium open bar, buffet that makes the 19th hole blush, VIP grandstand at the 18th, live entertainment, daily prizes, and even a player autograph opportunity — all in an air-conditioned oasis a stone’s chip from the public village. It’s the kind of place where you might sit next to a major winner while sipping something you can’t pronounce.
Back to Veerman. Last year, he came roaring from five shots behind with a final-round 69 — not a typo, and not a bad score either, considering Sun City’s greens roll faster than gossip on the range.
He edged out Aldrich Potgieter, Matthew Jordan, and Romain Langasque by a single shot, clinching his second DP World Tour title and becoming just the sixth American to win the Nedbank Golf Challenge.
“My first experience of the Nedbank Golf Challenge was amazing. I had heard so much about the tournament and watched it over the years, so to be able to win it was a dream come true,” said Veerman.
“Everything about the week was truly world-class. We had incredible functions, and the fireworks display was out of this world.
The golf course was a strong test and it was just a fantastic experience all around. To be able to win a tournament of this stature, and which is played in honour of one of the world’s greatest golfers, is something I cherish and I cannot wait to return to Sun City and try to defend my title.”
And the Black Knight himself, Gary Player, was quick to welcome Veerman back to the fold.
“The beauty of the Nedbank Golf Challenge is the return of our former champions,” said Player. “We have had so many wonderful winners over the years who have built up such a history with this tournament, as well as with the fans.
It will be fantastic to see Johannes back at Sun City as he tries to claim a unique place in the record books for American golfers in this tournament.”
So, mark your calendars. December in South Africa means sunshine, spectacle, and Johannes Veerman chasing history at a course that demands your best and forgives absolutely nothing. Just the way Gary likes it.
And if Veerman manages to go back-to-back? Well, it won’t just be fireworks on the course.
It’ll be one for the history books — and probably the cocktail napkins in the HospitaliTEE Lounge.
