If there’s one thing that defines Q-School, it’s the fine line between glory and obscurity. And right now, Zander Lombard is marching firmly on the right side of it. The South African took control of the Final Stage at INFINITUM with a blistering seven-under-par 64, storming into a six-shot lead and setting himself up beautifully to regain full DP World Tour status for 2026.
Lombard, who began the day tied with Zimbabwe’s Benjamin Follett-Smith, put daylight between himself and the chasing pack by going full throttle around the Lakes Course. He reached 22-under-par for the week—six clear of Australian Connor McKinney—after a front nine that looked like it belonged on a highlight reel rather than a scorecard.
Birdies on the first two holes were followed by more gains at the fifth and sixth, a brief hiccup at the seventh, and then back-to-back birdies on eight and nine to turn in 30. The 30-year-old kept his foot down on the back nine, adding three more birdies and just one bogey to stretch his lead in Tarragona.
“It was really good stuff again,” Lombard said. “I hit the ball well and had good control over it, especially on the back nine when the wind started picking up and gusting in all different directions.
“The start set up perfect for me. I hit a gap wedge to about eight feet on the first and then hit the par five in two and two-putted, so the birdie-birdie start got some momentum going in the right direction. I just freewheeled and stuck to my process from there.
“It’s easy to just sit back and start making sloppy errors, so I’m trying to stay focussed and stay in it for two more days.”
That kind of discipline comes with perspective. Lombard knows what it’s like to be sidelined—he underwent ACL reconstruction surgery in July 2024, right when he’d climbed to a career-high 96th in the Official World Golf Rankings. His comeback has been quiet, calculated, and clearly effective.
“The hard work behind the curtain is starting to pay off,” he admitted. “I spoke to my wife early this week and I shouldn’t be here, but it’s because of a major surgery. I’m not reading too much into it, but this just proves that I was a top 100 player when I got injured and I feel like I’m getting back there.
“I’m enjoying my golf at the moment. I’ll do exactly the same stuff over the next two days because it’s been working.”
This isn’t Lombard’s first rodeo. He last earned his DP World Tour card through Q-School back in 2018, and now he’s closing in on doing it again. Confidence and calm are working in tandem—a dangerous mix for anyone chasing him.
Behind him, France’s Quentin Debove fired the round of the day, an eight-under 63 that vaulted him into a share of third at 15-under alongside Follett-Smith and DP World Tour winner Matthew Baldwin. Just one shot further back lurk Shubhankar Sharma, Aaron Cockerill, Nathan Kimsey, Hamish Brown, and Davis Bryant—all trying to keep their own Tour dreams alive.
A total of 60 players made the 72-hole cut, but only the top 20 and ties after six rounds will earn DP World Tour playing privileges (Category 18) for 2026. With two rounds to go, the pressure cooker of Q-School is only getting hotter—and right now, Lombard’s the one holding the flame.
The fifth round of the Final Stage continues tomorrow from 9:00am local time, with Lombard teeing off alongside McKinney and Follett-Smith at 10:44am on the Lakes Course.
