If you’ve ever played a course just after a refurb, you’ll know the feeling: a few edges still sharp, a few surfaces still finding their feet, and everyone politely pretending it was always meant to be that way.
Saadiyat Beach Golf Club has now moved past that awkward adolescence and into something far more convincing—an oceanfront 18-hole test in superb condition, with golfers flocking back as the upgraded back nine properly settles in.
The club welcomed players back earlier in the year, but this is the moment it starts to read like the finished article. From tee to green, the playing surfaces have matured, the conditioning has tightened up, and the routing feels fully established again—delivering the quality and consistency that have long kept Saadiyat Beach Golf Club in the conversation as one of the UAE’s must-play venues.
And the numbers are doing the talking. The returning demand through peak season has helped drive a record-breaking final quarter, with Q4 2025 landing as the busiest and most successful in the club’s history. Members, Abu Dhabi residents and visiting golfers have all responded to the same thing: a fully restored course that’s not merely open, but properly ready.
“The completion of the back nine enhancements was just the beginning,” said Karl Whitehead, Cluster Manager at Viya Golf. “What’s exciting now is seeing the course really come into its own. The condition is excellent, the course is playing exactly as intended, and the feedback from golfers has been overwhelmingly positive.”
Back nine upgrades now fully bedded in
The work on the back nine was delivered by Nicklaus Design in collaboration with Gary Player Design, and the brief reads like the best kind of restraint: complement what was already there, keep the character intact, but add fresh interest and better flow. With the project now complete and fully bedded in, the result is a round that feels familiar—yet noticeably renewed.
That matters because “new” isn’t automatically “better” in golf. A course doesn’t need more drama; it needs the right drama in the right places. What Saadiyat has done is sharpen the questions without changing the language of the test. You’ll still recognise the setting and the rhythm, but the back nine now asks for a bit more thought, and offers a bit more theatre when you answer correctly.
What changed on the closing stretch
The standout adjustments bring a clearer identity to key moments late in the round. There are refinements to the driveable par-4 10th—the sort of hole that tempts you into poor life choices and then charges interest. Tees have been extended and repositioned on holes including the 11th and 15th, subtly changing angles and club selection so the same hole can feel refreshingly different depending on wind and pin positions.
There’s also a dramatically reworked long par-4 now playing towards the Arabian Gulf, and a striking new short par-3 framed by sculpted dunes and coastal views—exactly the kind of hole you’ll remember whether you hit it stiff or make a charitable donation to the nearest sandy inconvenience.
The closing holes retain their iconic setting, now complemented by updated contours, native grasses and beach-style waste areas that help the round finish with a sense of occasion rather than simply a handshake.
Nicklaus Design and Gary Player Design collaboration
Architect names are often used like garnish, but here the collaboration reads on the ground. The enhancements have been designed to sit naturally within the original character of the course, not to fight it. The best redesigns don’t shout their own name—they quietly improve your decision-making and punish you when you ignore it. That’s the kind of “upgrade” golfers actually notice, and it’s a big reason Saadiyat Beach Golf Club is enjoying such a strong run of play.
A rare coastal course built around nature
Set against the white sands of Saadiyat Island and overlooking the Arabian Gulf, the course remains a rare example of world-class golf in harmony with its surroundings. It’s home to more than 250 free-roaming gazelles, along with a variety of migratory birdlife, and it continues to hold its distinction as the Middle East’s first Audubon Certified Cooperative Sanctuary.
In an era when “nature” can sometimes mean a decorative pond and a sad shrub, Saadiyat’s wildlife and setting feel authentic—an oceanfront environment that’s not just scenic, but alive. It’s part of what makes Saadiyat Beach Golf Club feel like a genuine destination rather than simply another round with a nice clubhouse photo.
