If the Vodacom Origins of Golf series is built on grit, drama, and the odd gust of South African coastal chaos, then Saturday at Pezula delivered all three in one untidy, unforgettable bundle.
The wind was misbehaving from the moment players stepped onto the first tee, but that didn’t stop Christiaan Burke from hanging on to his lead—or Albert Venter from muscling his way into a share of it.
The Vodacom Origins of Golf Final has been Burke’s playground all week, yet the third round started like someone had changed the locks on him. Two over on the front nine, his ball striking matched the weather: unpredictable, edgy, and downright awkward at times. But he steadied himself on the turn and came home like a man who’d just remembered he’s meant to be winning this thing, tearing through the back nine in five under to post a 69 and reach 18-under-par.
“It was really tough out there. I expected wind but not this much. I struggled a bit with my ball striking on the front nine, especially into the wind. Then on the back nine I just told myself I can do it and I need to just keep going. I’m really happy for how I fought back and am excited for the final round,” said Burke.
His recovery was textbook perseverance—until Venter turned in a scorecard that read like he’d played in an entirely different climate. A blemish-free 64 hauled him alongside Burke at the top and reminded the field that Venter is hunting victory number three on the Sunshine Tour.
“It was quite a windy day so I was expecting tough conditions, but I managed it well. I started off with a chip-in for birdie on the first hole which helps quite a bit. It’s a difficult hole and you can’t really go for the green with the wind into the hole. Then I just stuck to the process and was hitting good shots. I had birdies on the fourth and fifth holes which I felt like jumpstarted the round,” said Venter.
He wasn’t bluffing. On 13, he took on a two-iron shot into the wind—because why not—and walked off with another birdie. Then he attacked the drivable 14th, parked himself in the bunker short-left, and splashed out a sublime up-and-down for yet another one. Birdies at 17 and 18 completed the kind of round that makes scoreboards blush.
“On 13 I hit a decent drive and took on a big shot with a two iron into the wind, and made birdie which got the back nine going. I went for the green on the drivable 14th and finished short left in the bunker, and played an exceptional bunker shot for birdie there. Then over the last few holes I just tried to keep it in play and give myself an opportunity, and I managed to birdie 17 and 18 for a spot in the final group.
“I managed myself very well around the course and hit it into the right spots, and where I didn’t I managed to make up-and-downs to keep it going. I’m very pleased and looking forward to the challenge.”
Just one shot back lurks Casey Jarvis, who signed for a 69 and is chasing his second title in three weeks. Burke is still searching for his maiden Sunshine Tour victory, but he’s shown enough this week to know he belongs here. Venter has the swagger of a man who’s been here before. Jarvis has momentum. Sunday will not be gentle.
And for a moment of pure golf theatre, Christiaan Basson delivered a hole-in-one on the par-three fifth, earning himself 50,000 Skybucks courtesy of Airlink—and becoming the seventh player this season to notch an ace.
Pezula has set the stage. The wind will likely return for applause. The final round of the Vodacom Origins of Golf Final now looks like a straight fight between three men who’ve earned the right to stand on that first tee with everything to play for.
