The Rory McIlroy Award has its first winner, and Aaron Rai has supplied a tidy inaugural entry. The Englishman collected 1,876.5 Race to Dubai points across the four Majors in 2026, edging Open champion Ryan Fox by 42.5 points after a season built around one magnificent Sunday at Aronimink.

A Major win did the heavy lifting

Rai’s 48th-place finish at the Masters was useful rather than thunderous. Then came the transformation: a closing 65 and a three-shot US PGA Championship victory, making him the first English winner of the Wanamaker Trophy since Jim Barnes in 1919. A tie for 11th at the U.S. Open followed before a share of 79th at The Open.

It was one peak, two solid returns and one week best filed under “character building”. The arithmetic, unlike a committee, had no interest in presentation.

The PGA victory lifted Rai to a career-high 15th in the Official World Golf Ranking, and he remained inside the top 20 after Royal Birkdale.

Ryan Fox made it uncomfortably close

Fox’s victory at Royal Birkdale gave the contest a finish. The New Zealander ended on 1,834 points, close enough to make every half-point look important.

Rai prevailed because the award measures cumulative Major performance, not possession of the most recently polished trophy. It rewards the year’s body of work while still placing a premium on winning.

McIlroy praises the quiet achiever

McIlroy said: “I’m delighted that Aaron’s achievements this season have been recognised as he becomes the first recipient of the Rory McIlroy Award. His performance down the stretch on Sunday at Aronimink was truly impressive, and it would be difficult to find anyone who wasn’t pleased for him.

“He’s always been known on the DP World Tour as a hardworking and talented player, and even more so as a fantastic person, so it’s been a pleasure to see what he has done in recent years and particularly this season.”

Rai credits the work, not the fireworks

Rai said: “I’m truly honoured to be the first recipient of the Rory McIlroy Award during what has been an incredible season for me and my team. Rory is an inspiration to so many people, including myself. His golf game speaks volumes but the person he is and the way he conducts himself is equally as inspiring.

“For many years, my focus has been on working hard and continually developing my game. I’m very fortunate to be able to compete on the DP World Tour and continue to relish the opportunities to do so.

“To be honoured with this award which recognises Major Championship performances on the DP World Tour and for it to be in honour of Rory really means a lot to me.”

The Tour sees more than a trophy

The strategic point is plain. Created after McIlroy became Europe’s first Career Grand Slam winner, the trophy links DP World Tour membership to performance on golf’s largest stages, while placing him alongside Seve Ballesteros, Harry Vardon, Sir Henry Cotton and John Jacobs in its named-award cabinet.

McIlroy cannot win his own prize, which is sensible. Golf has enough complicated rulings without introducing competitive self-tribute.

Rai will receive the trophy from McIlroy at the BMW PGA Championship in September. The first engraving belongs to the man whose season was measured in Major points, but defined by the calmest back nine of his life.
