Golf tournaments become attached to places rather quickly. Change the course and, even if the name above the door remains exactly the same, the furniture suddenly looks unfamiliar.
That will be the case with the Alfred Dunhill Championship in 2027, when the Sunshine Tour and DP World Tour co-sanctioned event heads to Durban Country Club for the first time in its history.
The dates are new as well. The championship will be played from 25–28 February 2027, with an increased prize fund of US$2 million.
So, apart from the venue, the date and the money, not much is changing.
Durban Country Club gets the Dunhill
The significant bit for golf followers is unquestionably the course.
Durban Country Club and the Alfred Dunhill Championship are two established names in South African golf, but until now they have existed perfectly happily without sharing a tournament week.
That changes in February.
Putting an established event onto a different golf course is one of the simpler ways of making it interesting again. There are no previous editions at Durban to lean on, no familiar tournament patterns to recycle and no convenient assumption that what worked before will necessarily work again.
The players will have to deal with the course in front of them. A revolutionary concept, admittedly.
A new February date
The move also places the championship on 25–28 February, so anyone accustomed to associating the Dunhill with a particular point in the golfing year will need to recalibrate.
Venue changes tend to attract most of the attention because golf courses photograph considerably better than calendars, but shifting both at once gives the 2027 championship a noticeably different complexion.
It will still be an Alfred Dunhill Championship. It simply won’t look much like the version people have become accustomed to.
There is US$2 million on the table
Then there is the small matter of the money.
The prize fund increases to US$2 million for the 2027 championship, adding another significant change to a tournament already moving course and date.
It remains co-sanctioned by the Sunshine Tour and DP World Tour, bringing the two circuits together in South Africa with a considerably healthier pot waiting at the end of the week.
Exactly who will be attempting to remove the largest portion of it will become part of the story nearer the time.
For now, the attraction is the reset itself.
Same championship, very different week
Professional golf can occasionally become rather fond of familiarity. Same places, recognisable rhythms, everybody knowing where everything is and precisely how long it takes to get from the practice ground to lunch.
Durban removes some of that certainty.
For the first time, the Alfred Dunhill Championship will have to establish its own history at Durban Country Club rather than inherit one from previous editions.
And that is probably the most interesting part of the move. The US$2 million matters. The February date matters.
But golf tournaments ultimately become remembered for what happens on the golf course.
From 25 February 2027, this one gets a new one.
