Staff WriterEngland Golf’s U16s produced a storming performance at Ballybunion Golf Club, thrashing Ireland 14–4 in their annual international clash despite brutal weather that would have made Noah consider a provisional.
Saturday morning’s matches were wiped out by the conditions, with 40mph winds and 55mph gusts battering the Irish coast. By the afternoon, the foursomes finally got underway, and both teams slugged it out to finish the day level at 3–3. Four of the six matches went down the last, setting up a tense final day.
But that tension didn’t last long. On Sunday, the England U16s tore through the singles, winning an astonishing 11 out of 12 matches to seal an emphatic away victory.
England U16 Team Captain/Manager Jamie O’Connor summed it up perfectly: “There were a couple of key moments on Saturday as George Whitehead and Aaron Moody crucially won the 17th and 18th to win their foursomes match, while Frankie Morton and Albie Beeston won 16 and 17 to recover a half in their match.
“It was well poised and we knew that we’d have to perform well on day two to get the win, and it was a really strong performance to complete a big victory, with the girls winning 6-0, and the boys winning 5-1.
“It was a really experienced England team, and was probably the last cap for all the players as U16s, so it was a really good test for the youngsters of how they control the controllables, and how to just stick in there and get the job done, as the weather was biblical!
“A big thanks to Ballybunnion and Golf Ireland for arranging it. We look forward to the return fixture next year, where we’ll be excited to have 12 fresh faces.”
Foursomes Battle Sets the Stage
The opening session was evenly matched:

- Arianna Virk & Ria Prabhakar lost 1-down to Gemma McMeekin & Grace Dowdall
- Lauren Crump & Emily Peaford won 2&1 against Beth Cuthbert & Eva Branks
- Alex Boyes & Thomas Hartshorne suffered a heavy 7&6 defeat to Harry O’Hara & John William Burke
- George Whitehead & Aaron Moody clinched a vital 1-up win over Luke Furlong & Adam Doherty
- Frankie Morton & Albie Beeston halved their match with Eoin Burrows & John Moran
With honours even at 3–3, Sunday promised fireworks.
