Eugenio Chacarra Leads Race to Dubai as McIlroy Eyes History

Three victories have put Eugenio Chacarra within touching distance of the Harry Vardon Trophy, but with Rory McIlroy chasing a record-equalling eighth title and Patrick Reed still in contention, the DP World Tour Championship promises a fascinating finish.

Three tournament wins, the Race to Dubai lead and the chance to join two of Spain’s greatest golfers. Eugenio Chacarra has enjoyed quite a season. Now comes the rather awkward business of finishing it off.

The Spaniard heads into the final fortnight of the DP World Tour campaign sitting on 4,092.89 points, having displaced Patrick Reed at the top of the Race to Dubai Rankings. With the Abu Dhabi Aldar Championship still to come, followed by the season-ending DP World Tour Championship at Jumeirah Golf Estates from 12–15 November, there is plenty left to play for.

Should Chacarra hold his nerve and finish the job, he would become only the third Spaniard, after Seve Ballesteros and Jon Rahm, to be crowned European Number One.

Not bad company to keep.

The 25-Hole Sunday That Changed Everything

Chacarra’s ascent owes plenty to a remarkable afternoon in Delhi earlier this month.

With the DP World India Championship requiring him to negotiate 25 holes on the final day, the Spaniard produced a closing 70 to finish 21 under par, two shots clear of the field.

It was his third DP World Tour victory of 2026, following June successes at the KLM Open and DS Automobiles 83° Open d’Italia. More importantly for the season-long standings, it ended Reed’s lengthy spell at the summit.

The victory also lifted Chacarra 11 places to 39th in the Official World Golf Ranking and took his DP World Tour career tally to four titles, including last season’s Hero Indian Open at DLF Golf and Country Club.

For a player now facing the biggest opportunity of his European Tour career, the timing could hardly be better.

“To be leading the Race to Dubai with two events to go is a dream,” said Chacarra.

“To have the chance to win the Harry Vardon Trophy would be very special. I know the players behind me will push hard in Abu Dhabi and Dubai, but I’m playing the best golf of my career and I can’t wait to get there.”

That last point matters. Confidence is useful at this stage of the season, although it does tend to be rather more comfortable when accompanied by three victories.

McIlroy, Reed and a Familiar Battle for the Trophy

Chacarra might have the advantage in the standings, but the field assembling on Jumeirah Golf Estates’ Earth Course is hardly short of players capable of complicating matters.

Chief among them is Rory McIlroy, who returns seeking an eighth Harry Vardon Trophy. The Northern Irishman’s seven Race to Dubai titles already represent an extraordinary achievement, but another would draw him level with Colin Montgomerie’s record.

Reed, meanwhile, arrives as the man Chacarra recently knocked off the top of the rankings. Having spent so long setting the pace, the American will have his own reasons for wanting the final fortnight to produce another change in the standings.

Dubai resident Tommy Fleetwood adds further quality to the contest. The World Number Seven is pursuing a fourth UAE title, having won back-to-back Abu Dhabi events in 2017 and 2018, secured the Race to Dubai crown in 2017 and added the inaugural Dubai Invitational in 2024.

His FedExCup triumph on the PGA Tour last year provides another significant achievement on an already impressive CV.

Fellow Dubai resident Adrian Meronk arrives with renewed confidence after ending a 1,078-day wait for his fifth DP World Tour title at the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship.

The Pole began the final round two shots behind before producing a five-under-par 67 at the Old Course, St Andrews, to finish two clear.

Major champions Aaron Rai and Ryan Fox are also confirmed. Rai claimed the US PGA Championship in May, becoming the first Englishman in 107 years to do so, while Fox lifted the Claret Jug at Royal Birkdale in July.

Joe Dean’s Journey From Delivery Driver to Dubai

If Chacarra’s story is about maintaining momentum, Joe Dean’s offers a reminder that professional golf rarely follows a tidy career plan.

As recently as 2022, the Englishman was competing on the EuroPro Tour. He played no ranking golf in 2023, despite earning his DP World Tour card through Qualifying School that year.

Financial difficulties meant he could not begin competing until the following February. During that period, Dean continued working as a supermarket delivery driver while also seeking help from a hypnotist to address his difficulties with international travel.

His breakthrough eventually arrived at the Husqvarna British Masters, hosted by Sir Nick Faldo, where he recorded 11 birdies across 24 holes on the final day to claim his maiden DP World Tour victory.

Now he has earned a place among the season’s leading performers in Dubai.

It is quite a distance to travel from supermarket deliveries to the fairways of Jumeirah Golf Estates, and not simply in geographical terms.

DP World Tour Championship 2026: Tickets and Spectator Information

The DP World Tour Championship takes place from Thursday 12 to Sunday 15 November at Jumeirah Golf Estates, with spectators able to follow the season’s conclusion across four days.

Thursday admission is free with advance registration, while General Admission tickets for Friday through Sunday start at AED 160. Children aged 17 and under can attend free throughout the tournament, although advance ticket registration is still required.

Discounted General Admission tickets are also available for groups of eight or more.

For spectators wanting a closer look at the action, the returning 1st Tee Experience provides a dedicated viewing area overlooking the opening shots, with complimentary refreshments. It is available as an add-on to General Admission.

Ticket+ offers access to The Greatest Bar on Earth overlooking the 17th green, while premium hospitality options include the Championship Chalet beside the 18th green and the Earth Lounge overlooking the 16th.

According to organisers, Sunday hospitality in the Championship Chalet and Friday access to the Earth Lounge are already sold out, with Saturday in the Chalet close to capacity.

Beyond the golf, the Championship Village features children’s activity zones, free golf lessons, trick-shot displays, big screens and sports activities. Saturday brings Ladies Day, while Sunday is designated Family Day.

The tournament also hosts its DP World Tour Breakfast Club on Wednesday 11 November, with business networking tickets starting at AED 200.

Full ticket information and advance registration are available at dpwtc.com.

For Chacarra, however, the immediate concern is rather simpler. He has spent the year collecting trophies and climbing the rankings. Two tournaments remain to determine whether the biggest prize of his season is still to come.
