Modern Roots is a six-piece capsule built around forest colours, technical layering and a deliberate push beyond the usual course-only wardrobe.
The intriguing part is not that Galvin Green has discovered green — that would be awkwardly late — but that it is using the landscape as a route into a more urban, streetwear-aware look.
The shacket tells you where Galvin Green is going
The clearest expression of that ambition may be the LEGEND shacket rather than the collection’s more overtly technical pieces.
Made from recycled nylon, it borrows the familiar shape of an overshirt and adds the windproof function of Galvin Green’s INTERFACE-1™ construction, along with a button-down front, zipped pockets and a structured cut.
That is a sensible place to start. The shacket already belongs to the everyday wardrobe; Galvin Green does not have to convince anyone that the silhouette works away from golf. The challenge is making the added performance feel useful rather than over-engineered.
“CONCEPT: Modern Roots is about bringing together two worlds that naturally complement each other – the raw, understated character of nature and the energy of modern life,” said Sofia Ask Klason, Global Brand Director at Galvin Green.
LEGEND makes that idea tangible. It looks less like a golf garment trying to escape the clubhouse and more like ordinary clothing that happens to know what a crosswind feels like.
Streetwear influence, without fancy-dress energy
DANBY pushes the fashion side further. The hooded sweatshirt uses a jacquard knit pattern, soft fleece interior, high neck and close-fitting hood. Underneath the styling, it remains an INSULA™ mid layer made entirely from recycled polyester, with warmth, stretch, breathability and quick-drying performance built into the brief.
The MARSH polo provides the collection’s most obvious graphic moment. Its stonewashed aerial print takes inspiration from golf landscapes viewed from above, turning course contours into the pattern rather than falling back on the usual procession of miniature clubs, balls or geometrical filler. Contrasting ribbed trims sharpen the design, while VENTIL8™ PLUS fabric supplies stretch, breathability, quick-dry properties and UV protection.
MURDOCH is quieter: a long-sleeve VENTIL8™ PLUS polo with black contrasting ribbed collar and cuffs. It is the sort of piece that can sit beneath the louder layers without starting an argument of its own.
AUSTIN and LAMAR keep the weather credentials intact
Modern Roots may be looking towards the city, but Galvin Green has not misplaced the waterproofing department.
AUSTIN is the collection’s technical anchor: a fully waterproof and windproof winter jacket with lightweight Thermore® padding, a laminated hood and Pertex® Shield Stretch technology intended to protect against bad weather without restricting movement. Galvin Green classifies it as a DRYVR™ jacket. Its face fabric is recycled polyester and the padding is recycled too.
For golfers who describe winter golf as “character-building” until the rain turns horizontal, this is the piece doing the serious work. The key design question is whether all that technology can remain visually quiet enough to function away from the course. In premium technical clothing, the spec sheet is only half the job.
LAMAR takes a lighter approach. The INTERFACE-1™ vest uses recycled nylon with Thermore® recycled polyester padding, together with a printed lining and contrasting details. It is aimed at those awkward transitional days when a full jacket feels excessive but trusting the forecast feels naïve.
Jungle Green gives the six pieces a common spine
Modern Roots is built around two colour stories, Jungle Green and Navy, with Black and Blue Slate around them. Every garment is available in two colourways, and Jungle Green runs through the entire six-piece line.
AUSTIN, LEGEND, LAMAR and MARSH come in Jungle Green and Navy. DANBY and MURDOCH are offered in Jungle Green and Blue Slate. The pieces can also be paired with PEDRO shorts and NICK trousers in Navy and Sand.
The consistency helps. Forest inspiration can become costume very quickly if every leaf, bark texture and mossy shade is invited to the meeting. Here, the palette does more of the work than literal outdoors graphics. The result is recognisably themed without appearing dressed for an unusually fashionable forestry shift.
Recycled materials carry more of the load
Recycled materials feature across Modern Roots, while garments in the collection also use bluesign®-approved fabrics and are made without the intentional use of PFAS. That does not make a new clothing collection environmentally weightless, and no sensible reader should confuse buying another jacket with environmental abstinence.
It is still a relevant direction for technical golf apparel. Weather protection, insulation and stretch have long depended heavily on synthetic fabrics, coatings and laminates. Increasing recycled content and removing intentionally used PFAS from construction addresses part of that compromise without pretending performance clothing has somehow become impact-free.
Klason puts the design brief this way: “We took inspiration from the forest and translated that into the colours, textures and graphic elements throughout the collection, while keeping the versatility and performance that are fundamental to every Galvin Green product. We wanted these pieces to feel at home on the golf course, but just as relevant when you’re away from it,” she added.
The real test comes after the 18th
Modern Roots is not trying to reinvent technical golf clothing. Its more interesting ambition is subtler: to make specialist performance pieces look less specialist.
That matters because premium golf apparel has more value when it survives outside its original setting. A waterproof jacket that looks right only over a polo on the first tee has a narrower life than one that can handle a wet commute, a weekend walk and a windy medal round without making its owner look as though a corporate golf day has gone badly off course.
The Galvin Green CONCEPT: Modern Roots collection is available through selected stockists and online. Across six pieces, it moves from serious winter protection to graphic mid layers and polos, but the strongest idea is the one running quietly through all of them.
Golf clothing is more useful when it does not insist on looking like golf clothing.
