Yas Links and Yas Acres Score Sustainability Hole-in-One as Viya Golf Earns GEO Certified® Status

Viya Golf, the name now synonymous with UAE fairways and forward-thinking greenkeeping, has just chalked up a pair of birdies for sustainability.

Both Yas Links Abu Dhabi and Yas Acres Golf & Country Club have officially achieved GEO Certified® status — the gold standard for environmental excellence in golf.

And let’s be honest, in a sport that’s no stranger to sprawling turf and serious water bills, this is a feat worth shouting about.

Awarded by the non-profit GEO Foundation for Sustainable Golf, this hard-earned recognition is no vanity badge.

It’s the result of a thorough, independently verified review based on the International Voluntary Standard for Sustainable Golf — a mouthful, sure, but the kind of rigour you’d expect when deciding who’s truly walking the walk on environmental stewardship.

This recognition is a testament to the hard work and passion of our entire agronomy and operations teams,” said Corey Finn, Cluster Director of Agronomy for Viya Golf.

Sustainability isn’t just a department, it’s a mindset embedded across our clubs. From protecting native habitats to reducing our water footprint and engaging the local community, this certification reflects our vision for a future-fit, responsible game.

And what a vision it is. At Yas Links, they’re swapping tap for treated sewage effluent (TSE) to irrigate fairways — not glamorous, but undeniably clever.

Add in mangrove and dune restoration projects, plus cutting-edge irrigation audits, and you’re looking at one of the most resource-efficient golf courses in the region.

Meanwhile, Yas Acres is proving that desert doesn’t mean desolate. With turf reduction strategies and bird-friendly landscaping (94 species and counting, seven of them globally under threat), they’re turning sand into sanctuary.

Beyond just water and wildlife, Viya Golf is also pouring energy into people. Yas Links hosts environmental education for local schoolchildren, while Yas Acres pushes community outreach through events like the annual Pink Run for breast cancer awareness and its grassroots “Get into Golf” programme. It’s all part of a wider push by Viya Golf to make the game more accessible, more inclusive, and frankly, more meaningful.

Still, the work doesn’t stop here. GEO Certified® status isn’t a lifetime guarantee — it’s a call to keep improving. Viya Golf plans to tighten waste tracking, boost renewable energy usage, and deepen ecological education efforts as it drives forward its sustainability agenda.

This recognition also coincides with a larger investment push across Viya Golf’s Abu Dhabi portfolio — a clear sign that the group isn’t just polishing trophies; it’s building something with lasting value.

In a region known for big ideas and even bigger projects, Viya’s green credentials might just set the new benchmark for what modern golf in the UAE can and should be.
