Du Plessis Back on Top After Injury Comeback at Gary Player Country Club

By any measure, Hennie du Plessis has made a roaring return to the Sunshine Tour. After years of injury frustration, the South African is back in the spotlight, leading the Blu Label Unlimited Challenge heading into Saturday’s final round at the iconic Gary Player Country Club.

Du Plessis sits atop the leaderboard on 41 points after adding 18 more on Friday, leaving the field trailing in his wake. His nearest challenger, Tyrone Ryan, could muster only two points to sit on 31, while Yurav Premlall is a further point back on 30 after a modest round of six.

It’s the kind of comeback story that belongs in the Sun City sunshine — a player who’s been through the wringer and come out swinging. Du Plessis’ road back hasn’t been easy.

Surgery on his right wrist sidelined him for months, only for inflammation in his left wrist to cruelly delay his recovery. Yet somehow, he’s returned looking sharper than ever.

“I’m very happy to be back, and to be back at Sun City which is such a special place to start my campaign again,” he said.

The 27-year-old’s tone carries both relief and quiet determination. For a player once tipped for greatness, the forced break was brutal — but it offered unexpected blessings.

“It was very unfortunate. I was doing all the right things to rehab after surgery, and then the left wrist got inflammation and an irritation of the joint. But in that time we had a baby and I had time to spend with him, which if I was playing a full schedule overseas wouldn’t have been possible.”

Now, with the swing back in rhythm and the confidence flowing, Hennie du Plessis finds himself not just testing his game but chasing history. His last individual Sunshine Tour victory came in 2017, and his most recent win of any kind was alongside Jean Hugo at the Steyn City Team Championship in 2018.

This week, however, he’s reminding everyone just how dangerous he can be when fit. His aggressive play at the Gary Player Country Club has been a masterclass in consistency and control — traits forged not just on the fairways but through months of frustration and patience.

“I’m just happy to be contending. I’m very happy with the work I’ve been putting in,” he said.

For now, Du Plessis stands on the brink of completing one of the most impressive comebacks on the Sunshine Tour in recent memory.

From surgery tables to leaderboards, from wrist braces to the wide fairways of Sun City — Hennie du Plessis is proving that resilience, not luck, defines the best in the game.
