The 2027 Investec South African Open will offer three places in The Open at St Andrews and a Masters invitation for its champion, adding serious consequence to an already significant week at Stellenbosch Golf Club.
A national Open hardly requires additional incentive, but nobody in golf has ever objected to Augusta National and St Andrews being added to the prize table.
The 2027 Investec South African Open will once again provide a direct route into two of the game’s Majors, with places in both The Open and the Masters Tournament available when the championship returns from 4-7 March.
The top three finishers at Stellenbosch Golf Club who are not already exempt will qualify for The Open at St Andrews. The champion will also earn a place in the Masters.
For players trying to force their way onto golf’s biggest stages, that changes the arithmetic rather dramatically. Four good days in Stellenbosch could open doors that ordinarily require months of work.
Three tickets to St Andrews
The Open exemptions have been confirmed by the Sunshine Tour and DP World Tour in partnership with The R&A and Augusta National Golf Club.
With St Andrews hosting The Open in 2027, the reward is particularly difficult to ignore. Three players who arrive at the South African Open without an exemption could leave with places at the Old Course waiting for them.
For the winner, there is another address to add to the itinerary: Augusta National.
It gives the 116th staging of the South African Open considerable competitive weight beyond the championship itself. There will be players chasing a national title, certainly, but the leaderboard could also become a Major qualifying table as Sunday afternoon develops.
Casey Jarvis showed where the road can lead
The value of that pathway is hardly theoretical.
Sunshine Tour Commissioner Thomas Abt pointed to Casey Jarvis as the clearest recent example. The young South African used the national Open as a springboard to Major appearances in both The Open and the Masters, then finished tied sixth at The Open — a career-best result.
“We’re incredibly grateful to be able to announce these Major exemptions, which play a powerful role in the ongoing story of the Investec South African Open as a championship of opportunity,” said Abt.
“Our national Open is a South African sports treasure which brings so much to our country. On the fairways, it opened doors for one of our brightest young stars – Casey Jarvis – to make his Major debuts in The Open and the Masters this year. He challenged for The Open and achieved a career-high finish of tied sixth there.”
For emerging players in particular, that is the bit that lands. Major qualification can often feel like a complicated collection of rankings, exemptions and distant possibilities. Here, the instructions are refreshingly uncomplicated: contend at the South African Open and the door may open.
A US$2 million championship
The Major places arrive alongside another substantial change for the tournament.
The prize fund for the 2027 Investec South African Open has been increased to US$2 million, while Investec has extended its title sponsorship for a further five years.
The previous, 115th edition was sold out, and organisers are expecting another strong response when tickets for Stellenbosch go on sale on 7 October 2026.
There is also a sizeable economic argument attached to the championship. Abt said the 115th edition contributed almost R300 million to the local economy and generated a net sponsorship value of R1.1 billion.
That makes the South African Open rather more than four days of tournament golf, even before anybody starts polishing the Claret Jug or measuring anyone for a green jacket.
Stellenbosch becomes the gateway
All of which leaves Stellenbosch Golf Club with a particularly intriguing assignment next March.
Golf’s second-oldest Open already brings history of its own. Its 116th edition will now arrive carrying a US$2 million purse, three potential passages to St Andrews and a Masters berth for the champion.
National Opens are supposed to matter.
This one comes with receipts.
