JJ Spaun’s late charge at the BMW PGA Championship was built around some exceptionally tidy iron play. Here are the Srixon irons, Cleveland wedges and Z-STAR DIAMOND ball he trusted at Wentworth.

JJ Spaun’s introduction to the BMW PGA Championship could hardly have gone much better.

Making his debut at Wentworth, the American produced a ferocious closing run to claim his first Rolex Series title and another sizeable trophy in a season already containing plenty of evidence that his game travels rather well.

And if you are interested in what was actually doing the work inside the ropes, the most revealing part of Spaun’s winning equipment setup sits firmly at the scoring end of the bag.

Spaun used a combination set of Srixon ZXi5 and ZXi7 irons, three different Cleveland Golf wedges and the Srixon Z-STAR DIAMOND golf ball as he attacked Wentworth’s pins and turned the championship in his favour late on Sunday.

The equipment story was particularly difficult to miss at the par-three 14th.

Spaun fired his approach to within five feet of the hole and converted the birdie, beginning the closing surge that carried him towards the title.

That is rather a convenient time for your irons to behave themselves.

The Srixon combo set behind Spaun’s iron play

Spaun does not use a single iron model throughout the set.

Instead, his configuration combines a Srixon ZXi5 4-iron with ZXi7 irons from 5-iron through pitching wedge.

It is the sort of blended arrangement increasingly familiar at elite level: a different solution at the long end of the set while retaining the preferred characteristics of another model through the scoring irons.

For Spaun at Wentworth, the important bit was not the theory but the outcome.

His iron play gave him the opportunity to attack flags during the tournament’s decisive stretch, with the shot into the 14th providing the clearest example. With the championship finely balanced, he produced an approach that finished inside five feet.

One swing later, the momentum had begun to shift.

It is a proper tour-player setup: not especially concerned with making the bag look neat for a photograph, considerably more concerned with having the right club when somebody hands you a scorecard.

Why the Z-STAR DIAMOND mattered at Wentworth

Spaun also played the Srixon Z-STAR DIAMOND golf ball throughout his victory.

Srixon positions the ball around a blend of distance, control and greenside performance, and Spaun trusted it alongside his iron and wedge configuration on a week when precision into Wentworth’s greens became particularly important.
