Robert TheodorsonLIV Golf Indianapolis 2026 has developed a useful split personality. 4Aces GC own the team race after a blistering second round at The Club at Chatham Hills, reaching 31-under and opening a five-shot advantage over Torque GC.
Yet the individual lead belongs elsewhere: Wild Card Richard T. Lee is one clear at 11-under, ensuring the weekend arrives with no shortage of arguments still to settle.
4Aces Turn Depth Into a Five-Shot Lead
Team golf becomes rather persuasive when the same badge keeps appearing near the top of the individual leaderboard.
Dustin Johnson and Thomas Detry are both 10-under through 36 holes, with Thomas Pieters a shot further back at 9-under after a 5-under 65. Detry followed an opening 66 with a 6-under 64, while Johnson added a 4-under 66 to his first-round 64.
The result is less a one-man charge than a rather inconvenient show of depth for everyone trying to catch them.
Johnson’s route has been especially tidy. He ranks first in the field in Strokes Gained: Approach at +4.49 and fifth in Strokes Gained: Off the Tee at +1.76. He is also chasing a fourth LIV Golf victory in the United States, which would be the most by any player in the League.
Detry and Pieters Make Old Chemistry Count
There is little mystery to the ease between Detry and Pieters. They have played alongside each other since their junior days and were grouped together in the second round, an arrangement that apparently encouraged competition without requiring anyone to start throwing elbows.
“We generally feed off each other,” Detry said. “I felt like he was pretty much ahead the whole day, so I was sort of catching up on him and was just trying to make birdies.”
Pieters described much the same dynamic from the other side.
“It’s obviously very competitive, and I want to beat him, he wants to beat me. But it’s loose. It’s nice. Anytime you play with a team member, it feels like that.”
That familiarity matters because 4Aces are not merely chasing a good week. Detry said the team had already finished No. 1 in the season-long rankings and had won three times this year. A Team Championship victory would put a suitably emphatic full stop on the campaign.
Richard T. Lee Refuses to Play the Supporting Act
For all the 4Aces noise, Lee has the number everybody else wants.
He followed his opening 63 with a 4-under 66 to reach 11-under 129 and take the solo individual lead. Detry, Johnson and first-round leader Laurie Canter are tied for second at 10-under.
Canter, who began with a career-low 62, returned a 68 in Round 2 — hardly a collapse, merely proof that golf has a habit of charging interest after a spectacular opening day.
Lee’s position is more striking because he is competing as a Wild Card, but his language after the round was notably free of drama.
“Coming out here, just having everything I want and everything I need. The courses are spectacular, and the conditions are amazing. People are nice. Just being on a tour like this is just a dream come true.”
For the moment, the dream includes looking down at everybody else on the leaderboard.
Torque, HyFlyers and Ripper Keep the Chase Alive
Torque GC are second at 26-under, five behind 4Aces, after Abraham Ancer produced a 5-under 65.
He made six consecutive birdies from holes 11 through 16 before a double bogey interrupted the run. At 9-under, he remains two shots from Lee.
HyFlyers GC and Ripper GC share third at 25-under. Michael La Sasso supplied the round of the day for HyFlyers with a career-best 10-under 60, lifting him to 9-under overall. It was the best round of his LIV Golf career and a sharp response during a challenging season.
Ripper captain Cameron Smith is also 9-under, part of a crowded group that includes Pieters, Ancer, La Sasso, Joaquín Niemann, Matthew Wolff and Lee Westwood.
Bryson DeChambeau sits T15 at 7-under, close enough that nobody sensible will be writing him out of the weekend.
Indianapolis Heads Into the Weekend With Three Races Alive
The individual title remains open, the Team Championship race has tightened around 4Aces, and the final two places on the season-long Individual Championship podium are still available. That is a generous amount of jeopardy for one leaderboard.
For Torque, the difficulty is obvious. Ancer is close enough individually to trouble Lee, but his team must erase five shots from a 4Aces side currently receiving serious contributions from three different players.
HyFlyers and Ripper are only one further back at 25-under. La Sasso’s 60 has dragged HyFlyers firmly into the conversation, while Smith gives Ripper an established presence among the group at 9-under.
Nobody has secured much beyond an advantageous starting position. Lee has one shot. 4Aces have five. Both margins are useful rather than luxurious.
Chatham Hills has done its part. Now comes the awkward business of turning Friday’s position into something worth keeping.
