Robert TheodorsonRookie Michael La Sasso has a chance to do the impossible tomorrow in what is almost assuredly the last tournament of the LIV Golf League.
After shooting a personal best 60 on Friday, La Sasso, the rookie from Ole Miss, followed up his magical second round with a solid 66, giving the youngster the lead at LIV Indianapolis with a score of 13-under par heading into Championship Sunday
To pull off his first career pro victory, LaSasso will need to hold off a crowded leaderboard which includes likely favorite Cam Smith, former PGA Tour star Thomas Detry, and former DP World Tour star Laurie Canter, and fan favorite Richard Bland all tied at T2 with a score of 12-under par.
Not far behind the trailing trio lies a list of familiar names, including Jon Rahm (T10; 10-under par), Bryson DeChambeau (T10; 10-under par), Sergio Garcia (T6; 11-under par), and Bubba Watson (T6; 11-under par).
While Rahm is the smart pick, and the man with the plan to head back to the PGA Tour next season, look for some desperation to come out of Garcia and Watson whose futures are huge question marks come Monday morning!
DeChambeau also has a huge opportunity to close out the league with a win, but has been battling through a visible shoulder injury throughout the day.
La Sasso’s efforts have also boosted his team, the HyFlyers, to a 2nd-place spot on the leaderboard going into Sunday. The HyFlyers, captained by Phil Mickelson, are one of three LIV Golf teams to have never won a tournament, and rarely, if ever, appear on the Top 3 podium.
To pull off the win, they’ll need to surpass Rahm’s Legion XIII who are one stroke ahead of the HyFlyers and are currently in first place with a score of 34-under par and hold off Dustin Johnson’s 4 Aces and Cam Smith’s Ripper, both of which have won multiple tournaments this season.
