The Nexo Championship Celebrity Pro-Am has recruited Finn Russell, Gregor Townsend and a formidable gathering of Scottish rugby names for Wednesday 19 August at Trump International Golf Links in Aberdeen.

The inaugural event precedes the Nexo Championship and gives spectators a rare look at how men accustomed to pressure, noise and public judgement cope with a stationary ball.

Scotland’s number 10 faces a different sort of pressure

Russell is the obvious headline act. The 33-year-old has won 95 Scotland caps since making his debut in 2014 and has scored more than 500 international points, placing him fourth on the country’s all-time list.

Golf will ask different questions of a player celebrated for imagination under pressure. A fly-half can disguise a pass; a golf ball is less easily persuaded to keep a secret. Still, Russell’s presence gives the day genuine sporting weight rather than the slightly threadbare glamour sometimes attached to celebrity golf.

He will be joined by Zander and Matt Fagerson, whose combined 150 Scotland caps suggest that any slow group ahead should consider letting them through. Zander made his international debut in 2016, with Matt following two years later. They became the 48th set of siblings to represent Scotland and were both selected for the 2023 World Cup squad.

George Horne brings current international form

Scrum-half George Horne completes a strong contemporary contingent. Since his 2018 debut, he has moved to within three appearances of 50 caps and most recently served as one of Scotland’s two vice-captains in the Nations Championship victory over Fiji at Murrayfield.

That blend of current players gives the Nexo Championship Celebrity Pro-Am a useful competitive edge. Nobody has supplied handicaps, which may be wise. Rugby dressing rooms have survived many things, but public arithmetic remains a delicate business.

Townsend and Hastings reunite in Aberdeen

Scotland head coach Townsend will also play, swapping selection meetings for club selection. He has led the national side since 2017 after a playing career that brought 82 Scotland caps and two appearances for the British Lions. His international career ended in 2003 before he moved into coaching.

Townsend will be reunited with former Scotland team-mate Gavin Hastings. The full-back won 61 international caps and captained his country 20 times, building a reputation for authority and composure. Both qualities are useful on a links course, especially once the breeze starts making unsolicited tactical suggestions.

Ryan Wilson, capped 50 times, joins Rory Lawson and Duncan Weir, who made 31 and 30 Scotland appearances respectively. The result is less a rugby guest list than a condensed history of the national side across several eras.

Football and tennis stars broaden the field

The celebrity line-up does not stop at the touchline. Scottish football will be represented by Gordon Strachan, Scott Brown, Charlie Mulgrew, Allan McGregor, James McArthur, Steven Fletcher and John Hewitt.

Judy Murray and Jamie Murray add tennis pedigree. Jamie’s seven major doubles titles make him one of the most decorated competitors in the field, although foursomes golf has a way of testing partnerships with considerably less mercy than Centre Court.

The range of names should give spectators plenty to follow even before the championship field takes over. It also gives the new pro-am a distinctly Scottish identity, rather than assembling famous faces with only a passing relationship to the place.

A lively curtain-raiser for the Nexo Championship

The Celebrity Pro-Am is designed to build the atmosphere in Aberdeen ahead of the Nexo Championship at Trump International Golf Links. Its first staging has secured a line-up with recognisable sporting stature, particularly for supporters who have spent years watching these players in dark blue.

Tickets are now on sale, with early booking encouraged. There will be drives, putts and almost certainly some robust interpretation of the rules. More importantly, Aberdeen gets a sporting reunion with enough competitive instinct to ensure nobody treats Wednesday as a gentle walk spoiled.
