For Portugal, this is more than another week of golf tourism. It is a deliberate bid to turn the Algarve’s familiar fairways into a global sporting stage.
Europe gets its first PGA TOUR Champions stop
The 54-hole event at The Els Club Vilamoura is also the first PGA TOUR-sanctioned individual stroke-play tournament held in Portugal. That gives the inaugural edition a useful dose of consequence before anyone has struck a shot.
PGA TOUR Champions president Miller Brady said: “Bringing the first-ever PGA TOUR-sanctioned event to Portugal was an easy decision. The strength of the field this week, with five World Golf Hall of Fame members and more than 470 professional victories between the players, underlines the quality of the competition. This is a special week for PGA TOUR Champions, and we believe it will continue to grow year after year.”
Els has designed the stage — and entered the cast
Els is not merely lending his name to the venue. The World Golf Hall of Fame member designed the course and will compete, an arrangement that carries slightly more personal jeopardy than the usual ribbon-cutting duties.
He said: “This has been a real team effort from the beginning, and I’m incredibly proud to see everything come together. I’ve known and loved this area for more than 20 years, so to have the opportunity to create a championship golf course here, while also making it enjoyable for members and players of every level, has been very special. I’m very excited about what this event can become over the coming years.”
The Algarve makes a strategic play
The tournament arrives with government and tourism support because golf can fill hotel rooms beyond the summer peak and reach affluent international audiences. The reported broadcast footprint — around 80 million viewers in more than 170 countries — explains the enthusiasm rather neatly.

More than the impressive figures, an audience of around 80 million viewers in over 170 countries, and an estimated economic impact of 45 million euros, it represents a unique opportunity to showcase Portugal to a highly qualified international audience, highlighting our quality of life, gastronomy, safety, climate, and the excellence of our tourism offer.”
A five-year bet, not a one-week novelty
The Portugal Invitational sits within a five-year partnership involving PGA TOUR Champions, Arrow Global Group, Turismo de Portugal and Turismo do Algarve.

How to watch the Portugal Invitational
The first round begins on Friday, 31 July, with the champion crowned on Sunday, 2 August. All three rounds will be shown in the United States on GOLF Channel, while international coverage will be distributed through PGA TOUR Champions media partners in more than 170 countries and territories.
