Yas Links Earns European Tour Group Sustainability Award After Transforming Its Coastal Playground

Yas Links has carved out another notch on its belt, with Yas Links Abu Dhabi earning top honours in the Venue category at the European Tour Group Sustainability Awards. It’s a reminder that one of the UAE’s most striking coastal layouts isn’t just easy on the eye — it’s putting in the hard graft behind the scenes too.

The accolade spotlights years of work on environmental care, community involvement, and resource management, all while hosting the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship under full GEO Certified status. In short, this place isn’t waiting for the future to happen; it’s building it.

What makes the win interesting isn’t the trophy itself, but how the club went about earning it. Water is the lifeblood of any Middle Eastern golf course, and Yas Links has tackled the issue head-on.

Run by Viya, the club now irrigates every blade of maintained turf using treated sewage effluent and has cut overall usage by 20% through system overhauls, smarter tech, and a team that actually knows what it’s doing. Around the edges, more than 30 hectares of mangroves and restored dunes are protected by buffer zones and ongoing habitat management — a rare example of golf enhancing nature rather than steamrolling it.

The energy overhaul has been just as blunt. Solar-powered hot water, LEDs lighting the place properly, and a full switch to electric carts have dramatically reduced emissions. Single-use plastic bottles? Gone. Waste systems? Tightened up. The club isn’t polishing its halo; it’s proving that proper operations don’t need excuses.

Corey Finn, Director of Agronomy at Viya, put it plainly: “Sustainability is at the heart of everything we do at Yas Links. Our focus has been on reducing water consumption, adopting environmentally responsible turf practices and preserving the mangrove ecosystem. This recognition reinforces the importance of the work our agronomy team delivers.”

Karl Whitehead, Cluster Club Manager at Viya, added: “We are incredibly proud that Yas Links has been recognised by the European Tour Group for our commitment to sustainability. This award reflects the dedication of our entire team delivering best in class operations and experiences responsibly and with lasting impact.”

But the club’s influence stretches well beyond the first tee. Yas Links has become a genuine community engine — championing women’s golf, rolling out junior development programmes through school partnerships and the Par Three Junior Tour, and raising funds for Operation Smile UAE through its annual Links Charity Golf Day. It’s golf with purpose, not lip service.

The push grew even stronger with the launch of the Tommy Fleetwood Academy at Yas Links Abu Dhabi — a coaching model recognised worldwide now anchored firmly in the UAE’s capital. For youngsters, late bloomers, and everyone in between, it’s a development ladder worth climbing.

Put simply, Yas Links isn’t just another picturesque Gulf layout. It’s a working blueprint for how a modern club grows the game, protects its environment, and still runs a world-class championship venue.
