Andy DevaneyThe Asian Tour has entered a new partnership with the DP World Tour and PGA TOUR through at least 2029, establishing new playing pathways from 2027 and reviving select co-sanctioned tournaments.
It is a neat announcement carrying a considerable load: more international opportunities, a broader competitive calendar and another attempt to make global professional golf resemble a connected sport rather than several neighbouring kingdoms sharing a car park.
The agreement takes effect immediately, with the PGA TOUR and DP World Tour working through their existing Strategic Alliance to create commercial and playing opportunities alongside the Asian Tour.
For players, however, 2027 is the date worth circling.
A new route for leading Asian Tour players
Leading Asian Tour members will be offered a pathway towards playing rights on the DP World Tour beginning with its 2027 season.
The precise mechanics have not yet been revealed. The number of available places, the qualifying criteria and the tournaments involved will determine whether this becomes a genuinely valuable route or merely another attractive arrow on professional golf’s increasingly complicated flow chart.
Select events will also be co-sanctioned by the Asian Tour and DP World Tour from 2027. Further details are due when the DP World Tour announces its schedule for the following season later this year.
That return matters. Co-sanctioning can strengthen fields, create wider ranking and playing opportunities and place tournaments in Asia before a broader international audience. It can also give visiting players a proper look at the depth of Asian golf rather than the occasional glimpse through an airport lounge window.
An old relationship given new machinery
This is not the first working relationship between the Asian Tour and DP World Tour.
The two organisations previously operated a Strategic Alliance between 2016 and 2021, formalising a connection that began in February 1999 when the Malaysian Open became their first co-sanctioned tournament.
Since then, 108 tournaments have been co-sanctioned by the two tours. Another 21 have been tri-sanctioned with either the Sunshine Tour or PGA Tour of Australasia.
Those figures provide the agreement with rather more substance than the usual ceremonial handshake. The tours have worked together before, understand the practical demands and possess a sizeable archive of shared events. This is less a blind date than two former colleagues returning to the same table with a third, considerably more powerful, guest.
Asian Tour sees a wider global stage
Cho Minn Thant, Commissioner and CEO of the Asian Tour, placed player opportunities, audience growth and the strength of golf across the continent at the centre of the agreement.
“We feel the time is now right to collaborate with the DP World Tour and PGA Tour to enhance the Asian Tour for our members, fans and partners. Bringing the three Tours together under one partnership will increase the bandwidth of the professional game in Asia. Not only will co-sanctioning events see our members competing regularly on the global stage, but we are excited to welcome players from the other Tours to our pinnacle events, which showcase the strength and diversity of golf in Asia.”
“Bandwidth” may not be the most romantic word ever carried down a fairway, but the practical ambition is clear. The Asian Tour wants more routes outward for its members while attracting recognised international players to its leading tournaments.
That exchange is essential. A serious partnership cannot simply remove the best players from one tour and send them elsewhere. It must also strengthen the events, commercial appeal and competitive credibility of the circuit providing the talent.
DP World Tour renews a historic connection
For the DP World Tour, the deal restores a longstanding relationship while connecting it to the wider alliance it already operates with the PGA TOUR.

The phrase “formal pathways” is important. Professional golfers do not build careers from broad expressions of goodwill. They need defined routes, accessible starts and performances that lead somewhere tangible.
The agreement now has until the 2027 season to turn that language into a structure players can understand and trust.
PGA TOUR backs a more connected system
The PGA TOUR’s involvement gives the partnership greater commercial and strategic weight, even though the first confirmed playing-rights pathway is towards the DP World Tour.

“Through our Strategic Alliance with the DP World Tour, we have worked to build a more connected global golf ecosystem, and we are excited to welcome the Asian Tour into that effort. Together, we are creating new opportunities for players, enhancing key National Opens around the world and continuing to evolve and strengthen pathways to identify and develop the next generation of elite talent.”
National Opens could prove particularly significant. These tournaments often carry history, local relevance and national identity that cannot be manufactured by adding another generic event to an already crowded calendar.
Strengthening them through deeper fields and collaboration would give the partnership an impact beyond access lists and administrative agreements.
The schedule will provide the real verdict
The announcement establishes the framework, but the coming schedule will reveal its ambition.
Which tournaments are selected for co-sanctioning, how many playing opportunities are created and how clearly Asian Tour members can progress will matter more than the polished language surrounding the deal.
There is nevertheless sound logic behind the reunion. The Asian Tour brings strong markets, established tournaments and a diverse membership. The DP World Tour contributes an international schedule and a defined competitive route. The PGA TOUR adds reach, influence and the considerable gravitational pull of the game’s largest weekly stage.
Global golf has spent enough time discussing alignment to test the patience of a rules official. This partnership now has the opportunity to produce something more persuasive: better tournaments, credible pathways and doors that open because a player’s scores demanded it.
