The Nedbank Golf Challenge is back at Sun City this December, and it’s already got a distinctly South African flavour.
Daniel van Tonder, the country’s first confirmed player for the 2025 edition of “Africa’s Major,” is set to tee it up from 4–7 December at the Gary Player Country Club – a place he knows as well as his own backyard, and with far more bunkers.
Van Tonder’s name may not yet sit in the pantheon alongside Els, Oosthuizen or Player himself, but he’s making damn sure it’s getting etched in deeper letters.
It’ll be his second swing at the Nedbank Golf Challenge after debuting back in 2014, where he finished 29th. But that was before he grew the beard, the swagger, and the four wins that now define his latest season.
“I’m looking forward to playing in the Nedbank Golf Challenge again,” Van Tonder said. “As a South African, you always know your career is headed in the right direction if you have a tee time at the Nedbank Golf Challenge.”
He’s not wrong. Sun City’s December showpiece isn’t just a golf tournament—it’s a rite of passage. And Van Tonder’s route back to it is paved with pure pedigree.
Last season, he dominated the Sunshine Tour, claiming the Courier Guy Order of Merit and bagging a DP World Tour card for his troubles. Four victories—two of those on the HotelPlanner Tour—made 2024 his breakout year. One might call it a proper blitzkrieg of a campaign.
“It’s an iconic tournament that we all grew up watching and wanting to play in one day,” he added. “I had my first chance in 2014 and I loved every second of that experience. It’s like playing in the Majors – once you’ve tasted it, you want to get back there.
“So I’m really looking forward to returning this year on the back of my most successful season ever on the Sunshine Tour.”
Now 34, Van Tonder will try to become the first South African to lift the crystal trophy since Branden Grace did the honours back in 2017. No pressure. Just the small matter of outplaying a field that already includes defending champion Johannes Veerman, who’s jetting in from the U.S. to protect his crown.
Off the course, the Nedbank Golf Challenge isn’t exactly skimping on the fan experience either. The ever-popular HospitaliTEE Lounge will once again serve as a five-star oasis for punters who enjoy their golf with a side of unlimited premium bar, gourmet buffet, and a seat on the VIP grandstand at 18. Not to mention daily prizes, autograph sessions, live music, and the chance to say, “I watched Van Tonder win it all while sipping champagne in air-conditioned comfort.”
This year’s Lounge is centrally located near the bustling public village and offers both indoor and outdoor seating, plus a live TV feed so fans never miss a shot—even if they’re queuing for the buffet again.
With Sun City ready to roar, and Van Tonder swinging like a man who’s got something to prove, the Nedbank Golf Challenge is shaping up to be more than just a highlight on the calendar—it’s set to be a homecoming with intent.
And if Van Tonder plays the way he has all year, you’d be a fool to bet against him adding his name to South African golfing folklore.
