There are worse ways to leave amateur golf than as English Amateur champion. Jamie Van Wyk has decided the time is right to test himself in the professional ranks, bringing an impressive chapter of his golfing career to a close and setting his sights on an even bigger challenge.

The 25-year-old from Royal Lytham & St Annes Golf Club will make his professional debut at the Ford NSW Open in Australia from 12–15 November, less than a year after a run of performances that established him among England’s leading amateur golfers.

And he is not travelling halfway around the world simply to make up the numbers. Van Wyk has already identified winning a professional tournament and securing HotelPlanner Tour status as his ambitions for 2027.

An English Amateur Title Worth Remembering

Van Wyk’s victory at the 2026 English Amateur Championship was the standout achievement of his amateur career, although there was plenty more to celebrate during his final season representing England.

He was the only unbeaten player in England’s international match victory over France at Golf de Chantilly, collecting three wins and a halve from his four matches.

Against a French side he considered particularly strong, those 3.5 points proved a memorable contribution to England’s success.

His individual results were equally encouraging. Runner-up finishes at the Avondale Amateur in Australia and the Walton Heath Trophy were accompanied by a share of third place at the Australian Master of the Amateurs.

For Van Wyk, though, nothing quite matched lifting the English Amateur trophy with his family and friends watching.

“Obviously winning the English Amateur is my biggest achievement to date and something I am beyond proud of. It meant a great deal to me to have my family and friends there to watch me win, as it doesn’t always happen with the amount of travelling we do.”

It was a fitting highlight in a career that had already brought success overseas and at home.

In 2025, Van Wyk won the Welsh Men’s Open Stroke Play Championship and helped England secure victory at the Women’s & Men’s Home Internationals. He also recorded top-ten finishes at the NSW Amateur, Avondale Amateur and Concord Cup during an extended period competing in Australia.

Australia Awaits as Professional Career Begins

That Australian experience should at least make the surroundings familiar when Van Wyk returns for his first two professional appearances.

His debut comes at the Ford NSW Open, held at The Vintage Golf Course in Rothbury from 12–15 November.

He will then travel to Nudgee Golf Club for the Queensland PGA Championship from 19–22 November.

Both events offer an immediate opportunity to measure his game against professional opposition, but his longer-term target is already clear.

“My goals for 2027 would be to win a professional event and give myself the chance to secure my card on the HotelPlanner Tour.”

It is an ambitious starting point, although Van Wyk heads into the professional game with a substantial amateur record behind him.

The England Golf Experience Behind His Progress

Beyond the trophies and tournament results, Van Wyk credits his time with England Golf’s Men’s Squad as an important part of his development.

The opportunity to train, travel and compete alongside other leading English amateurs has been central to his progress.

“2026 has been a great year. Being part of the England Men’s Squad has been a real lifelong dream. It’s so special to be part of a great group of lads travelling all around Europe, whether that be to matches, tournaments or training camps.”

He has also acknowledged the support of Nigel Edwards, Stephen Burnett and Ben Gorvett for their management and advice, alongside coaches Rob Watts and Nick Soto for helping him develop his game over the past two years.

“Being a member of the England Men’s Team has helped me develop in many ways, with access to top-level facilities, world-class coaches, financial support and playing opportunities worldwide.”

Van Wyk becomes the latest player to graduate from England Golf’s performance pathway, following Eliot Baker, who has recently confirmed his professional status on the DP World Tour for 2027.

The next stage begins in Australia, where Van Wyk will exchange amateur honours for the week-to-week demands of professional competition.

He has the results, the international experience and a clear idea of where he wants to go.

Now comes the business of getting there.
