AfrAsia Bank Mauritius Open Set for Spectacular Return to La Réserve Golf Links

By the time the first tee shot is struck at La Réserve Golf Links this December, the whispers will have turned into roars. Peter Matkovich, the acclaimed co-designer behind the award-winning course at Heritage Resorts, is convinced the world is only just beginning to understand how special this place really is.

“Word will continue to spread about just how good this golf course is,” says Matkovich — and you believe him.

From 18–21 December, La Réserve Golf Links — the Indian Ocean’s first and only contemporary links — will once again host the AfrAsia Bank Mauritius Open, a DP World Tour and Sunshine Tour co-sanctioned event.

The course, carved into the rugged southern landscape of Mauritius, will welcome an international field to a layout already being hailed as one of golf’s modern masterpieces.

In its debut year, the course didn’t just make waves — it took home the title of World’s Best New Golf Course at the 2024 World Golf Awards. Matkovich himself was named Golf Course Architect of the Year, cementing his reputation as a visionary designer with a flair for blending natural beauty with strategic challenge.

“The course has settled and matured so well and the team at Heritage Golf Club has just been so supportive,” says Matkovich. “The professionals play on great golf courses throughout the year and we’re proud to contribute to that.

I think we’ll surprise a lot of people. I’m really looking forward to showcasing what La Réserve Golf Links is all about and how Mauritius is becoming a recognised golf destination.”

And he’s right — this year’s event could mark a new chapter for Mauritius as a bona fide golfing destination. The island has already proven it can host a world-class tournament, with last year’s AfrAsia Bank Mauritius Open generating a record-breaking US$4.2 million in net economic impact.

There’s also the tantalising subplot of England’s John Parry, who will attempt to make tournament history by becoming the first player ever to defend his title at the event.

But the real star, as Matkovich would tell you, is the course itself. With its rolling dunes, ocean vistas, and devilishly clever routing, La Réserve Golf Links is pure theatre — the kind of course that gets under a player’s skin and into their memory.

In a sport increasingly shaped by technology and tourism, Mauritius is quietly emerging as a new frontier for golf — and La Réserve Golf Links is leading the charge. As Matkovich puts it, this course hasn’t just raised the bar for golf in Mauritius — it’s raised it for the entire region.

Come December, the world will once again tune in to see what all the fuss is about.

And if Matkovich is right, the whispers about La Réserve Golf Links will soon be impossible to ignore.
